Get ready for some seriously sunny days ahead. As May approaches, the UK is preparing for a heat surge that could send temperatures soaring to 26°C. With 74 counties across England, Scotland, and Wales expected to feel the heat, it’s time to dust off those summer clothes – it looks like we’re skipping straight to the sunshine.
Rising Temperatures Early in May
The forecast from the GFS weather model predicts rising temperatures as early as May 4, with some areas in southern and central England hitting highs of 21°C to 22°C. That’s not too shabby for early spring, right? By the evening, the warmth will extend to North Wales, reaching around 21°C.
The southeast of England will experience the most intense heat, with London expected to be one of the hottest spots. So, if you’re in the capital, it might be time to break out the sun cream – this isn’t just a brief moment of warmth!
The Heat Intensifies
As the days roll on, temperatures will continue to climb. On May 5, the mercury is expected to hit 24°C in the south-east, particularly in London, which will see the hottest conditions of the day.
In Scotland, temperatures will hover around 20°C in some places, with a few lucky areas in Wales hitting 23°C, reports The Mirror. But let’s be real—while some of us are basking in the sun, others in Northern Ireland and Scotland might still need a light jacket to cope with the cooler air.
The Hottest Day: May 6
The real heatwave action, however, is expected on May 6. This will be the hottest day, with London reaching a sizzling 26°C, making it a perfect day for a picnic in the park or a stroll along the Thames.
Elsewhere in England, the Midlands, Yorkshire, and East Anglia will see highs of 24°C to 25°C. The warm weather will stretch across several counties, and we’ll all be looking for ways to cool off.
No Official Heatwave Just Yet
Interestingly, even though these warm temperatures are certainly worth celebrating, they won’t officially be classified as a heatwave. In the UK, a heatwave is declared when temperatures reach or exceed the local threshold for three consecutive days.
That threshold varies by region—28°C in the southeast and 25°C further north. So, while we’re all going to enjoy some lovely sunshine, we’ll have to wait a little longer for the official heatwave status.
Enjoy the Sunshine!
So, as the days heat up, make sure you stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. A 26°C day might sound like summer, but remember that spring is still officially here—just with a bit of extra warmth.
Whether you’re planning a barbecue or just enjoying the sunshine from indoors, it’s time to soak up the change in the weather. Here’s hoping this burst of warmth sticks around for a while!
