A major UK high street chain is beginning the first phase of a wide-ranging closure plan that will see up to 150 stores shut over the coming years, with the initial wave of closures now starting to take effect across the country.
First Store Closures Begin In Scotland
The British Heart Foundation is set to close its Hawick branch in Scotland this month, marking the first confirmed closure in a wider restructuring programme. The shop is expected to shut during July, although customers will still be able to visit and donate items while trading continues in the lead-up to closure.
The Hawick store is the first of several planned shutdowns following a major review of the charity’s retail estate.

Wider Plan To Close 150 Stores
The closure in Hawick forms part of a broader plan announced last month to shut around 150 stores across the UK. The organisation currently operates approximately 640 shops nationwide, meaning the closures represent a significant restructuring of its retail network.
The changes will be carried out over a two-year period as part of a phased reduction strategy.
Reasons Behind The Restructuring
The charity has cited rising operational costs and shifting consumer habits as key reasons behind the decision. Like many retail operators, it has faced increased pressure from higher expenses and changes in how customers shop and donate.
The organisation says the restructuring is intended to ensure long-term sustainability of its retail operations.
Other Locations Included In Closure Plans
Several additional stores have been identified as part of the planned closures. Branches in Rhyl High Street, Bangor and Worksop are among those expected to shut within the next phase of the programme.
Some reports indicate that dozens of stores have already been notified of potential closure ahead of future financial periods.
Impact On Staff And Volunteers
The charity has stated that affected employees and volunteers will be supported throughout the transition period. Where possible, staff may be offered redeployment opportunities within nearby stores or other areas of the organisation.
Volunteers are also expected to be considered for alternative roles within the wider charity network.
Charity Response To Closure Programme
The British Heart Foundation has emphasised the importance of its retail network in supporting its wider mission. It says its shops play a key role in fundraising and community engagement, while acknowledging the difficult trading environment facing the sector.
Despite the closures, the organisation says it remains committed to maintaining a strong presence on UK high streets.
