Sainsbury Nectar Shake-up Means Customers Can Now Collect Points in a New Way

Sainsbury’s customers can now earn Nectar points when ordering selected groceries through Uber Eats, following an expansion of the supermarket’s loyalty scheme. The change allows shoppers to collect one Nectar point for every £1 spent on eligible Sainsbury’s products ordered through the delivery platform.

The update applies to customers using participating Sainsbury’s stores on the Uber Eats app or website. Shoppers need to add their full Nectar card number before completing their order, as points cannot be added after a purchase has been made.

Nectar Points Added to Sainsbury’s Uber Eats Orders

The new collection option extends the existing partnership between Nectar and Uber, which already allows members to exchange points for vouchers covering Uber journeys and Uber Eats orders. Customers can now collect points while purchasing Sainsbury’s groceries through Uber Eats and later use their Nectar balance for available rewards.

According to Sainsbury’s, the rollout covers more than 1,300 locations across the UK, giving customers another way to collect points when using the supermarket’s rapid-delivery service. The scheme applies to eligible grocery purchases with a minimum spend of £1.

Once a Nectar card has been linked and the purchase qualifies, points will be credited to the customer’s account within 28 days. The points collection option is available only when shoppers select groceries from a participating Sainsbury’s store through Uber Eats and enter their card details before checkout.

Some products are excluded from earning points. These include gift vouchers, baby milk, lottery tickets, tobacco, vapes, nicotine products, proprietary medicines, spirits and liqueurs. Additional restrictions apply to alcohol purchases in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Partnership between Nectar and Uber Continues to Develop

The latest change follows previous links between the two companies, allowing Nectar members to use their points across Uber services. Customers can access the redemption option through the Nectar app by opening the “Partners” section and selecting Uber.

According to Uber Eats general manager for grocery and retail in the UK, Katie Hunter, the addition of points on Sainsbury’s orders was designed to allow customers to collect Nectar rewards while using the platform for grocery shopping.

Now, they can collect Nectar points on all their Sainsbury’s essentials as well as spending them across the entire Uber app,” Hunter said. She added that the partnership focused on flexibility and convenience for customers using the service.

Mark Given, Sainsbury’s chief technology, marketing and data officer, said the expansion provided Nectar members with another way to receive value from the partnership. “Nectar members can already turn their points into Uber rides or Uber Eats treats – and now they can collect points when ordering Sainsbury’s groceries through Uber Eats too,” he said.

According to reports on the rollout, the move comes as supermarket loyalty schemes continue to expand across digital delivery platforms. Tesco has also announced plans to launch grocery services through Uber Eats and Deliveroo later in the summer, while Nectar has already introduced points collection through Deliveroo for Sainsbury’s shopping.
