The initiative is available to households using EDF’s FreePhase tariffs and is intended to help customers make greater use of periods when renewable electricity generation exceeds demand. According to the Daily Express, customers can use the free period to run household appliances, charge electric vehicles and power their homes without paying for electricity consumed during those hours.

The latest free electricity window reflects the way EDF’s FreePhase tariff responds to changes in electricity supply and demand. It also forms part of the supplier’s broader approach to encouraging customers to shift their energy use away from peak periods.

Free Electricity Available to Customers on Eligible FreePhase Tariffs

According to the Daily Express, the six-hour free electricity period is available to customers signed up to both the FreePhase Dynamic and FreePhase Static tariffs. The supplier said the free window has been scheduled because renewable electricity generation is expected to be high while demand across the national grid is forecast to remain relatively low.

EDF stated that all FreePhase customers receive access to free electricity whenever there is an excess of renewable generation and lower electricity demand. The company reported that customers received a total of 28 free electricity hours during June under the same arrangement.

FreePhase operates as a smart time-of-use electricity tariff rather than using a single fixed price throughout the day. Customers can take advantage of the free period by carrying out energy-intensive tasks during the designated hours, including charging electric vehicles or operating household appliances.

The tariff is divided into three pricing bands. Green runs from 11pm to 6am and represents the super off-peak period. Amber applies between 6am and 4pm, and again from 7pm to 11pm, covering off-peak hours. Red applies from 4pm to 7pm and represents the peak pricing period.

Two Tariff Options Give Customers Different Pricing Structures

Customers may choose between two versions of the FreePhase tariff. According to EDF, the FreePhase Dynamic option adjusts its three pricing bands each day in line with wholesale electricity prices, while FreePhase Static keeps the same rates fixed for a period of 12 months.

The company said customers using the FreePhase Dynamic tariff saved an average of £112 during the first three months of 2026 compared with its Standard Variable Tariff. EDF also reported that off-peak electricity under the tariff is, on average, 28% cheaper, while overnight electricity costs are around 40% lower.

Callum Morgan, Product Design Expert for Smart Tariffs at EDF, said: “FreePhase is our innovative new tariff shaking up how our customers think about their energy usage and put savings in their control. Tomorrow we’re giving six hours of free electricity, showing how customers can directly benefit from changing wholesale prices, and by shifting more electricity out of the peak, they can save even more.”

She added that, as the traditional fixed energy system gives way to cleaner and more flexible electricity, FreePhase is designed to give households access to cheaper off-peak prices while helping them make better use of their electricity supply when those lower-cost periods are available.
