Thousands of homes across the North East of England were left without electricity on Easter Sunday after Storm Dave brought strong winds and overnight disruption. An amber weather warning had been issued ahead of the storm, with gusts reaching up to 80mph in exposed coastal areas.
Hundreds of postcodes across Northumberland, County Durham, Tyneside and Wearside were affected, with engineers working to restore power throughout Sunday morning. According to Northern Power Grid, teams were responding to multiple call-outs across the region following storm damage to infrastructure.
Widespread disruption after overnight winds
Storm Dave hit Northern England and southern Scotland on Saturday evening and overnight, bringing high winds that caused damage and power outages across several communities. The Met Office had issued an amber weather warning covering the North East between 7pm Saturday and 3am Sunday, warning that the storm could cause injuries or danger to life.
By Sunday morning, households in areas including Blaydon, Ponteland, Bedlington and South Hylton reported power cuts. According to reports from Northern Power Grid, the company was working to restore electricity as quickly as possible while also contacting Priority Services Membership customers who may require additional support during outages.
A map released by Northern Power Grid showed hundreds of properties affected across the region, particularly in rural and coastal areas where wind exposure was highest. According to the company’s statement shared on X, restoration teams were deployed across the North East to respond to faults caused by the storm.
