Poundland will close more than 700 stores across the UK at 7pm so employees can watch England face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, according to the retailer.

Every Poundland Branch Will Close at 7pm

The early closure will apply to all Poundland branches in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Dealz stores in the Republic of Ireland will also shut at 7pm.

The decision covers branches that usually trade later, including shops in retail parks, shopping centres and major city-centre locations. Some of these stores would normally remain open until 9pm.

Customers planning an evening visit are advised to complete their shopping before the revised closing time.

Staff Will Have Time to Travel Home Before Kick-Off

England’s match against Argentina is scheduled to begin at 8pm, with coverage available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Poundland retail director Alan Smallman said the earlier closing time would give employees more time to travel home and watch the match with their families.

We want to give as many colleagues as possible the chance to watch tonight’s game,” he said to The Sun, adding that staff had been working hard during the tournament. The retailer has also stocked football-themed products, including flags, face paint and lower-cost food for customers hosting match-night gatherings.

Smyths and Currys Are Also Closing Early

Poundland is not the only high street business changing its opening hours for the fixture. Smyths Toys will close all its stores in England at 6pm, giving employees two hours before kick-off.

Currys will shut almost 300 stores at 7pm. Matthew Speight, the company’s director of stores, said customers would still have time during the day to buy a television or other equipment before the match.

Opening hours may vary for individual branches, so shoppers should check the retailer’s store locator before travelling.

Tesco Could Change Sunday Trading Hours

Tesco has also announced plans linked to England’s progress in the tournament. The supermarket chain said its 2,000 Express stores would close at 7.30pm on Sunday if England defeat Argentina and advance to the final.

Larger Tesco supermarkets already operate under Sunday trading restrictions in England, while Express branches normally stay open later.

The temporary closures show how major retailers are adjusting trading hours around a national sporting event. Customers visiting Poundland, Smyths or Currys later in the day should check local timings and allow enough time to shop before doors close.
