Home Bargains has confirmed it will close all UK stores for three days over the festive period, allowing staff to spend more time with family and friends. The announcement was made on Friday, September 5, following the company’s annual conference. The retailer specified that stores will not open on December 25, December 26, and January 1, and will shut early on Christmas Eve.
The decision, reported by Mirror, applies to more than 600 Home Bargains stores across the UK. The company has not released further details about operational changes beyond the stated holiday closures.
Stores to Close On December 25, 26 and January 1
All branches of the discount retail chain will close on Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day), Friday, December 26 (Boxing Day), and Thursday, January 1 (New Year’s Day). Additionally, stores will shut earlier than usual on Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve), with trading ceasing at 5pm sharp.
With over 600 stores and more than 28,500 employees across the UK, the decision marks a significant pause during one of the busiest times in the retail calendar.
Statement From the Company
A spokesperson for Home Bargains stated:
Our colleagues work incredibly hard throughout the year, and we want to recognise that commitment. As a family-run business, we understand the importance of spending time with family and friends, particularly over the holidays. We’re proud to give our teams additional time off to enjoy the festive season.
This move reflects a broader effort within the company to prioritize staff wellbeing, especially during peak retail periods when extended hours are typically the norm.
About TJ Morris Ltd and the Company’s Origins
Home Bargains is operated by TJ Morris Ltd, trading as Home Bargains, a family-owned business headquartered in Liverpool. The company was founded in 1976 by Tom Morris, who opened the first store under the name Home and Bargain in Liverpool.
Over the decades, the brand has evolved into one of the UK’s largest independent grocers, known for its low-cost homeware, food, beauty products, and toys. Despite the scale, the company has maintained a reputation for competitive pricing and accessible retail spaces.
Staff-First Approach Welcomed
The three-day closure and early finish on Christmas Eve are consistent with Home Bargains’ stance in previous years. In an industry often criticized for expecting long holiday hours from staff, the company’s approach has been met with positive public and internal reception.
The combination of full closure on major holidays and the symbolic early close on Christmas Eve sends a clear message: employees’ personal time matters.
Impact for Customers
For regular shoppers, the schedule change means making holiday purchases a bit earlier than usual. With stores closed on three key days and an earlier finish on December 24, those relying on last-minute deals will need to plan ahead.
There’s unlikely to be much frustration though—Home Bargains’ clear communication and consistent festive policy over the years have helped set expectations.
