A government reminder has been issued to parents and guardians in Scotland regarding an upcoming administrative deadline that could affect their entitlement to Child Benefit payment. Families with children aged 16 to 19 may be required to update their information to maintain access to this financial support.

According to a report published by the Daily Record, payments are subject to automatic changes once a child reaches the age of 16. In order to avoid disruption, households must review current eligibility criteria and take appropriate steps before August 31 by following guidance from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Automatic End of Payments at 16 Without Action

When a child turns 16, Child Benefit payments do not continue by default. Unless parents confirm that their child is in full-time approved education or training, payments will end. This includes courses such as Highers, A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, and vocational qualifications such as NVQs and most level 3 qualifications.

Pre-apprenticeships and unpaid training under the ‘No One Left Behind’ programme in Scotland also qualify.

A full list of approved educational and training programs is available on the official GOV.UK website.

Claims can be renewed quickly via the HMRC online portal or the HMRC mobile app.

Significant Financial Impact for Families

Failure to act before the August 31 deadline could mean missing out on substantial annual support. For two children aged 16 to 19, the annual loss can amount to £2,251.60.

The current Child Benefit payment rates are:

  • £26.05 per week for the eldest or only child
  • £17.25 per week for each additional child

This equals:

  • £104.20 every 4 weeks for the eldest or only child
  • £69.00 every 4 weeks for each additional child

In total, this support can provide thousands of pounds annually to families during a child’s post-16 education years.

Official Support From Advice Direct Scotland

Advice Direct Scotland, the only Scottish organisation selected among 12 voluntary and community groups across the UK by HMRC, provides official advice on tax and benefit claims through taxadvice.scot.

Their service covers not only Child Benefit payment issues but also topics like tax credits, PAYE tax, and self-assessment.

Speaking this week, as schools reopen across Scotland, Rebecca Fagan, Benefit and Welfare Information Officer at Advice Direct Scotland, emphasized the urgency:

“With children returning to school across Scotland this week, it is an exceptionally busy time for parents, but it is crucial that nobody misses out on this financial support.”

Child Benefit is really important for many households, particularly at a time when budgets are being stretched by the cost of living and energy. Our message to parents is not to delay, but to act now. Extending your child benefit claim is easy, and it could put thousands of pounds in your pocket.”

“Our free, impartial service at taxadvice.scot is here to help anyone who is confused about child benefit. People can visit taxadvice.scot or call 0800 756 3381 for support.”

Other Support Schemes for Families

Eligible Scottish families can also apply for the Scottish Child Payment, which provides £27.15 per week per child under 16. This equals £108.60 per month and is available only in Scotland.

When combined with Child Benefit payments from HMRC, some households may receive up to £212.80 per month in additional financial support.

Parents and guardians can also check eligibility for other support including:

  • A £319 one-off school support payment
  • Assistance with childcare costs through tax-free top-ups

Information is available via the Children and Families section on mygov.scot or by calling Social Security Scotland free at 0800 182 2222.

Parents with teenagers aged 16 to 19 should act now to avoid a disruption in Child Benefit payments. With the August 31 deadline approaching and automatic stoppage rules in place, confirming a child’s continued education status is essential to maintain this income stream.
