Twenty new Asda Express stores are scheduled to open across the UK between October and November 2025, marking a further step in a retail strategy that began three years ago. The rollout forms part of a wider plan to increase Asda’s presence in the convenience market through smaller-format stores in urban and suburban areas.
According to information reported by the Birmingham Mail, the next store will launch in Castleford, with others following in locations across England. Asda has not released further details on individual opening dates, but the initiative reflects ongoing activity within the company’s regional expansion schedule.
Next Phase of Expansion Begins in Castleford
The next stage of store openings will start with a new Asda Express location in Castleford (Holywell Lane) in early October. This will be followed by additional openings in up to 20 locations across Britain, with the rollout expected to be completed by late November.
According to David Lepley, chief supply chain officer, the brand remains fully committed to growing its local presence through smaller-format stores:
We’re thrilled to kick off the next phase of our Express rollout and bring our heritage in delivering outstanding value to more locations across the UK.
In just three years, we’ve grown from zero convenience stores to establishing a major presence in the channel, with almost 500 stores by the end of the year.
This continued investment reflects the confidence we have in our convenience strategy and our focus on bringing Asda’s low prices to more local communities.
Rapid Convenience Growth After Early Pause
The Express model was initially launched in 2022, before being briefly paused to focus on the integration of 469 stores acquired from Co-op and EG Group. These sites have since been converted into Express outlets, reinforcing Asda’s retail footprint in high-footfall and neighborhood locations.
Lepley said this growth trajectory represents a long-term confidence in the convenience model, especially as customers increasingly look for flexibility in their grocery habits.
Product Offering and Consumer Use Cases
Each Asda Express store carries up to 3,000 products, blending national brands with own-label items. The store format is designed for various day-to-day needs including:
- ‘Top up’ shopping for essentials such as milk and bread
- Grab-and-go lunch options
- Ingredients for dinner preparation at home
By meeting these everyday missions, Asda aims to offer practical and affordable solutions for local communities.
