The scheme began accepting applications on 26 October, with support available to customers struggling to meet their energy costs. According to the Mirror, OVO considers household income, disposable income and medical needs when assessing applications, with priority given to those facing the greatest difficulties.

Who qualifies for OVO’s free electric blanket scheme?

OVO’s Extra Support Package is available to customers who believe they may struggle to pay their energy bills. Both pay-monthly and pay-as-you-go customers can apply, although eligibility does not guarantee access to every product or service offered.

The company assesses applications individually, taking account of household finances and any medical circumstances that could affect a customer’s needs. This approach is intended to identify those requiring the most assistance.

According to OVO’s official Extra Support guidance, the package operates throughout the year, with additional help made available during winter. Free energy-saving products can include heated throws and home-efficiency kits, depending on availability and the applicant’s circumstances.

Other products mentioned in the support package include electric blankets, mattress toppers and smart plugs. The company does not guarantee that every applicant will receive these items, and some products are only offered at certain times of the year.

Demand has previously affected availability. As reported by the Mirror, heated throws have run out quickly during earlier application periods, meaning customers seeking this particular form of assistance may find that supplies are limited.

Pensioners may also qualify for help even if they do not receive winter fuel payments. OVO says its eligibility arrangements extend beyond those used for the Warm Home Discount, which provides a one-off £150 reduction for qualifying domestic electricity customers.

How to apply and what other financial support is available

Applications can be submitted through OVO’s online eligibility service at https://customer-support-package.ovoenergy.com/. Customers must enter their energy account number, which appears on their monthly statement, along with the postcode registered to the account.

The application takes approximately five minutes to complete. Applicants are asked to provide information about their monthly available spending after bills have been paid, allowing OVO to assess their financial circumstances.

According to OVO, customers receive an eligibility answer immediately after applying. The application service is operated by Lightning Reach, and information submitted through the form is used to assess individual support needs.

Customers who apply again can only select products they have not previously claimed successfully. OVO also states that applicants’ information will be securely stored on its Priority Services Register to help tailor the assistance available.

The Extra Support Package extends beyond energy-saving equipment. Eligible customers may receive reductions in Direct Debit payments, emergency credit top-ups, assistance with existing energy debt or longer repayment arrangements. Specialist teams can also provide debt and benefits advice, while the Priority Services Register offers additional assistance to customers whose personal circumstances affect how they manage their energy supply.

OVO maintains that it cannot provide every form of assistance to every applicant. Customers concerned about their bills can nevertheless use the eligibility service or contact its specialist support teams to establish what help is available.
