The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has assigned its highest-risk recall classification to a nationwide recall of select Spring & Mulberry chocolate bars due to the potential presence of Salmonella. The affected products were sold through retail stores and Amazon.
According to the FDA, the recall was expanded after an investigation traced the potential contamination to a single lot of date ingredient used in manufacturing. The company says no confirmed illnesses have been linked to the recalled products.
Chocolate lovers across the United States are being urged to check their pantry after Spring & Mulberry voluntarily expanded a recall covering multiple varieties of its date-sweetened chocolate bars. The products were available for purchase online and through select retail partners nationwide beginning in August 2025.
The recall has since received a Class I designation from the FDA, indicating that exposure to the affected products could result in serious adverse health consequences or death. Consumers who purchased the recalled chocolate are advised not to consume it.
FDA Assigns Class I Recall After Expanded Investigation
According to the FDA, Spring & Mulberry announced the expanded voluntary recall on May 8, 2026, following what the company described as a comprehensive root cause investigation conducted with its manufacturing partners, food safety experts, and the agency.
The investigation identified a single lot of date ingredient as the most likely source of the potential Salmonella contamination. In response, the company recalled all finished products manufactured using that ingredient lot.
Spring & Mulberry stated that all finished products included in the expanded recall tested negative for Salmonella. The company also said there have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the recalled chocolate bars.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections, particularly in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. According to the FDA, healthy individuals may experience symptoms including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, while more severe illness can occur in rare cases.

Multiple Chocolate Varieties and Production Lots Affected
The recall includes numerous Spring & Mulberry date-sweetened chocolate varieties, including Mint Leaf, Mixed Berry, Earl Grey, Lavender Rose, Mango Chili, Mulberry Fennel, Pecan Date, Pure Dark, Pure Dark Mini, Sea Salt, Coffee, and Blood Orange.
According to the FDA, affected products can be identified by their flavor name, UPC, and batch or lot code printed on the back of the packaging and the inner wrapper. The products were sold nationwide through online sales and selected retail partners.
The FDA announcement notes that consumers who have purchased any recalled product should not eat it. To request a refund, customers are instructed to photograph the product packaging showing the batch code and email the image to [email protected] before disposing of the product.
News of the recall gained renewed attention after the FDA assigned the Class I classification, the agency’s most serious recall category. According to the FDA, this classification reflects situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
Spring & Mulberry said it takes product safety and quality seriously and encouraged consumers with questions about the recall to contact the company through its dedicated recall email address. The company said customer service is available during business hours, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
