Millions of Ohio residents struggling with high summer temperatures and rising energy bills may be eligible for one-time financial assistance of up to $800 under a state energy support programme launching on July 1 aimed at helping households manage cooling costs during the hottest months of the year.
Summer Cooling Assistance Programme Launches
The assistance is being offered through Ohio’s Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program, which runs from July 1 through September 30. The initiative is designed to support households facing difficulty paying electricity bills or maintaining safe indoor temperatures during the summer season.
Eligible residents may receive funding to help cover electric bills, purchase air conditioning units or fans, or repair existing central air conditioning systems.
Who Can Apply For The $800 Payment
Eligibility for the programme is based on both income and household circumstances. Applicants must meet income thresholds set at 175% of federal poverty guidelines for households of up to seven people, with different limits applied to larger households.
For a family of four, the income cap is set at $57,750. Households may also qualify if they include a member aged 60 or older, or someone with a documented medical condition. Qualifying health conditions include respiratory illnesses such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other lung diseases.
Priority Support For Vulnerable Residents
The programme prioritises households at risk of utility disconnection or those that have already lost access to electricity services. It also supports residents who need to establish new utility connections or maintain essential cooling systems during extreme heat periods.
Individuals already enrolled in certain energy assistance plans may also be eligible for additional support through the scheme. Officials say the programme is intended to reduce health risks associated with extreme heat exposure, particularly for vulnerable populations.
How The Application Process Works
Residents must schedule an appointment with Ohio Heartland Community Action Commission to apply for assistance. Appointments can be arranged by phone, and applicants are required to provide documentation including recent energy bills, proof of income and household composition details.
Additional documentation may be required for applicants claiming medical eligibility, including physician verification of cooling-related health needs. Proof of citizenship or legal residency is also required for all household members.
Previous Demand For The Programme
In its previous cycle, the Summer Crisis Program supported more than 55,000 households across Ohio. A total of $12.5 million in benefits was distributed to residents in need of energy assistance during the summer period.
Officials expect continued high demand as temperatures rise and energy costs remain elevated across the region.
