Goodwill shoppers across the US should expect stores to close on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day in 2026, although additional closures and reduced hours may vary by location. Goodwill Industries International supports more than 150 regional nonprofit organisations, which operate with a degree of independence. As a result, holiday schedules are not identical across the country.
Goodwill Stores Will Close on Two Major Holidays
Goodwill locations are expected to close on Thursday, November 26, for Thanksgiving and Friday, December 25, for Christmas. The closures apply across the Goodwill network, although individual organisations can set their own operating schedules around those dates.
Customers planning to shop or donate should check their local Goodwill before travelling.
Holiday Hours Can Vary by Region
Because Goodwill operates through separate regional organisations, some locations may close on additional dates. Possible closures or reduced hours can include Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Some branches may also change their schedules on the days immediately before or after major holidays. Black Friday, the day before Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas can also have different opening hours depending on the local organisation.
Donation Centres May Also Have Different Hours
The holiday changes are not limited to retail stores. Donation drop-off centres can also close or operate on shorter schedules during the holiday period. Goodwill corporate offices may have different holiday hours as well.
Anyone planning to donate clothing, furniture or other goods should therefore check the schedule for the specific location rather than assuming that a nearby shop and donation centre have identical hours.
Regional Goodwill Organisations Set Their Own Schedules
Goodwill Industries International works with more than 150 regional organisations, each serving its own communities. This structure means that holiday policies can differ between areas.
A Goodwill shopper in one state may find a store open on a particular day while another location has closed or shortened its hours. Checking the local organisation’s website or contacting the branch directly is the safest way to confirm opening times.
Some Locations Have Already Announced Additional Closures
Previous holiday schedules illustrate how much local policies can differ. Goodwill of the Heartland, which serves communities in Iowa, closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Other regional organisations, including Goodwill of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio and Goodwill of Southeast Texas & Southwest Louisiana, announced Christmas Day closures and shorter hours on Christmas Eve. These examples do not necessarily apply to every Goodwill location.
Check Before Heading to Goodwill
The two nationwide holiday closures give shoppers a useful starting point when planning visits in late 2026. For dates around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day, opening hours can vary by region.
Customers should check their local Goodwill’s holiday schedule before shopping or dropping off donations, particularly during the days surrounding the main holidays.
