Goodwill is transforming a former Aldi location in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, into a new thrift retail store as the nonprofit expands its presence across the region. The 16,000-square-foot site is scheduled to open at the end of January after renovations began following the signing of a five-year lease.
Former Aldi Building Begins New Chapter
According to The Sun, Goodwill has already replaced the former Aldi signage with a banner announcing “Goodwill store coming soon!” at the Lower Burrell location, marking the start of the conversion process.
The new store will feature a retail area alongside 10,000 square feet dedicated to thrift bins filled with donated goods. Customers will be able to find clothing, books, shoes, homeware, toys, games, sports equipment and other donated items.
The former Aldi closed its doors in 2023 after the grocery chain moved operations to a larger location in nearby New Kensington.

New Store Expected To Create Local Jobs
The upcoming Goodwill Southwestern Pennsylvania location is expected to create around 30 jobs in Lower Burrell. Applications are already being accepted through the organization’s website as construction work continues.
The nonprofit said the store will provide residents with a new place to donate unwanted goods while offering affordable second-hand shopping options.
Lauren Brown, vice president of external relations at Goodwill Southwestern Pennsylvania, described the expected impact of the new location.
“Its a community we can have real impact, real value,” she said.
“We want to be in a place where we’re good neighbors.”
Goodwill Continues Retail Expansion Across The Region
The Lower Burrell project is part of Goodwill’s broader growth plans, with the nonprofit preparing at least 78 new retail store additions in 2026.
The organization has also discussed moving a “small percentage” of donations to other locations and plans to open a “pay-per-pound” outlet store in a former Big Lots building next year.
Renovations at the Lower Burrell site have started, and Goodwill is currently accepting applications for the new store.
