A popular seasonal sweet sold at Lidl stores is now at the center of a nationwide recall after a labeling error raised serious health concerns. The issue involves undeclared hazelnuts, a known allergen that can pose significant risks to some consumers. The recall affects multiple states and Washington, D.C., with the product already distributed over several weeks. While no illnesses have been reported so far, the situation underscores ongoing challenges in food labeling and consumer safety.
Labeling error exposes consumers to allergen risk
Lidl US has recalled all lots of its Favorina Chocolate Ladybugs after discovering that the packaging failed to disclose the presence of hazelnuts. According to a notice published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on March 12, the product contains tree nuts in the form of German-style nougat, which were not listed on the label.
This omission is particularly concerning for individuals with nut allergies, as even small amounts can trigger severe or life-threatening reactions. The affected product was sold in 3.52-ounce boxes and can be identified by the universal product code 20304492. Distribution occurred between January 28 and March 11, 2026.
According to the FDA, the recalled items were available in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. The agency noted that the recall was initiated after it was determined that the product had been distributed in incorrect packaging that did not reveal the presence of hazelnuts.
Lidl US emphasized that the recall is voluntary and precautionary. In a public statement, the company said customer health remains its top priority and acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the situation.
Customers urged to return products as precautionary measure
Consumers who have purchased the affected chocolate ladybugs are being advised to stop consuming them immediately. According to Lidl US, customers can return the product to any store location for a full refund, and no receipt is required.
The company has also made customer support available through its hotline, which operates from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Saturday. This step aims to address concerns and provide guidance to those who may have already purchased the product.
Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, the potential severity of allergic reactions has prompted swift action. According to Lidl US, its Quality Assurance Department is continuously working to ensure that products meet internal safety and quality standards. The incident highlights how even minor labeling oversights can have serious implications. For consumers with food allergies, accurate ingredient information is not just helpful—it is necessary for safety.
