The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the recall notice on August 28, 2026, as a public service following the company’s announcement. The agency stated that the products may pose health risks to animals and to people handling contaminated pet food.
Two Frozen Chicken Recipes Affected by Nationwide Recall
According to the FDA, Northwest Naturals of Portland, Oregon, is recalling 53 cases, or 1,272 pounds, of Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe cat food and protein topper for dogs in 2-pound bags. The affected product is from lot B-5, with a best-by date of January 26, 2028, and UPC 087316384956.
The company is also recalling 19 cases, or 684 pounds, of Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe in 6-pound bags. This product comes from lot B-19, has a best-by date of January 25, 2028, and carries UPC 087316380392.
The FDA reported that samples collected and tested by the agency identified Salmonella in the Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe product. The Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe tested positive for both Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.
The recalled products were distributed to retail stores nationwide. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall at the time of the announcement. Consumers who purchased products from the affected lots are advised to stop feeding them to pets and return unused portions to the place of purchase for a full refund. Northwest Naturals said customers with questions can contact the company at 1-866-637-1872, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Time.
Health Risks Linked to Contaminated Raw Pet Food
Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes can affect animals that consume contaminated pet products and may also expose people who handle the food or surfaces that come into contact with it. According to the FDA, people can reduce risks by washing their hands after handling raw pet food and cleaning surfaces, bowls, utensils, and storage areas that may have been exposed.
In people, Salmonella infection can cause symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Some infections can become more serious and require medical care, particularly when bacteria spread beyond the intestines.
Listeria monocytogenes infections can cause symptoms such as confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, headache, fever, muscle aches, lethargy, nausea, and diarrhea. The FDA noted that pregnant women, newborns, adults aged 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness.
Pets exposed to Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes may show signs including lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, reduced appetite, and abdominal pain. According to the FDA, infected animals that appear healthy can still carry and spread the bacteria to other animals or people.
Northwest Naturals reminded consumers that raw pet food should be handled carefully, kept separate from human food, and stored frozen or refrigerated until use. Pet owners whose animals have eaten the recalled products and show symptoms are advised to contact a veterinarian.
