As the October half-term approaches, Coventry families will benefit from a new scheme offering free bus travel to reduce the financial strain of keeping children entertained. Running from October 27 to November 2, the initiative allows parents and carers to apply for free travel, a timely move designed to support local families during the school break.

The offer, part of a larger West Midlands campaign to boost bus usage, highlights the ongoing effort to make public transport more accessible and affordable for families. According to the West Midlands Combined Authority, this initiative follows the success of previous schemes aimed at enhancing commuter services and alleviating transport costs for key workers.

Free Swift Travel Cards for Parents

From October 6, parents and carers can apply for pre-loaded Swift travel cards that grant them free bus travel throughout the half-term period, running from October 27 to November 2. This programme is designed to ease the financial burden on families, particularly as they search for affordable ways to entertain their children. The free travel deal is available to both new and lapsed bus users, as long as they are travelling with a child.

The initiative is part of the West Midlands’ £20 million Bus Service Improvement Plan, funded by the Government, which seeks to incentivise the use of public transport. Richard Parker, the Mayor of the West Midlands, has expressed his enthusiasm for the scheme, noting that “at a time when family budgets are stretched, I am delighted to offer a free half-term on the buses.”

Parker also emphasised the wider impact, stating that this would make it cheaper and easier for families to visit events like Halloween festivities or fireworks displays, while encouraging sustainable transport choices.

Long-Term Benefits and Further Discounts

For those taking advantage of the free half-term offer, there’s also an incentive to continue using public transport. Families who participate in the scheme will be given a 25% discount on a further week of free travel, providing a potential incentive for greater bus usage beyond the half-term period.

The ongoing push to improve local bus services is part of a broader strategy by the West Midlands Combined Authority to bring buses under public control. By enhancing the quality of services and making public transport more affordable, officials hope to reduce reliance on cars, improve air quality, and promote greener travel options for all residents.

For Coventry families looking to cut costs this half-term, this free travel initiative offers not only a financial reprieve but also an opportunity to explore a more sustainable and convenient way of getting around the city. Applications for the Swift travel card will be available on the Transport for West Midlands website starting October 6.
