illions of low-income households across the UK could benefit from a £150 discount on their energy bills this winter. The Government has confirmed an expansion of the Warm Home Discount scheme, aiming to support more families during the ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

This year’s changes are expected to help around six million households, including an additional 2.7 million that are newly eligible. The scheme automatically applies for some claimants, while others must apply through their energy supplier, depending on their circumstances.

Who Qualifies for the £150 Discount

According to the Government, eligibility for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales has been broadened beyond the previous, more restrictive criteria. Historically, the scheme applied only to those receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, people facing high energy costs, or individuals on specific means-tested benefits.

The updated rules now remove the threshold if a means-tested benefit recipient is named on the energy bill. Pension Credit claimants will continue to receive the discount automatically. Others who qualify must apply via their supplier, provided that the supplier is part of the scheme and that either the claimant or their partner is receiving one of the following benefits:

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income Support
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • The ‘Savings Credit’ part of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit

The discount is applied directly to energy bills rather than being issued as a cash payment, helping to alleviate financial pressure during the colder months.

Energy Suppliers Participating in the Scheme

According to the Government, 27 energy suppliers have signed up for the Warm Home Discount, ensuring broad coverage across the market. These include:

  • Scottish Gas – see British Gas
  • 100Green (formerly Green Energy UK or GEUK)
  • Bulb Energy – see Octopus Energy
