A significant safety issue has prompted the recall of an additional 10,000 Citroen and DS cars across the UK. The vehicles, which are equipped with faulty Takata airbag systems, have been flagged as unsafe to drive due to the risk of potentially fatal malfunction. This announcement comes in the wake of a fatal incident in France involving a Citroen C3, highlighting the serious nature of the recall.

The safety alert, first issued in June, now includes a wider range of vehicles manufactured by Stellantis, the parent company of Citroen and DS. Owners of affected models are being urged to refrain from using their cars until they have been repaired. This issue further underscores the importance of addressing airbag malfunctions swiftly, as they could lead to devastating injuries.

What’s Behind the Recall?

The latest recall focuses on specific models of Citroen and DS cars built between 2008 and 2019. The vehicles are fitted with Takata airbags, which have been linked to fatal accidents worldwide due to their tendency to deploy unexpectedly or with excessive force. According to Stellantis, the recall was prompted by an incident in France where a woman was fatally injured by an airbag in a 2014 Citroen C3. Thankfully, there have been no similar incidents reported in the UK.

The recall now covers a wide range of vehicles, including the following models manufactured across various years:

  • Citroen C4 (2010-2013)
  • Citroen DS 4 (2010-2013)
  • Citroen DS 5 (2010-2015)
  • Citroen C Zero (2010-2017)
  • DS Automobiles DS 4 (2010-2017)
  • DS Automobiles DS 5 (2010-2018)
  • Citroen C3 (second generation) (2009-2017)
  • Citroen DS 3 (2009-2019)
  • DS Automobiles DS 3 (2008-2019).

Drivers of affected cars are being advised to stop driving them immediately and await instructions from the manufacturer. Stellantis has assured that all affected vehicles will be repaired at no cost to the owners, with the company aiming to complete most repairs by early October.

How Can Drivers Check if Their Car is Affected?

Stellantis has stated that all owners of affected vehicles will receive written notifications, advising them on the necessary steps to take. In addition, drivers can check whether their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the official Citroen UK website.

If a vehicle is confirmed as impacted, drivers are encouraged to register their car to expedite the repair process. Stellantis has also set up a dedicated helpline for any further queries at 0800 917 9285.

While the company has promised a quick resolution to the issue, the scale of the recall across Europe, including the UK, highlights the ongoing concern around Takata airbags. As the automotive industry continues to grapple with this widespread safety issue, drivers are reminded of the critical importance of addressing recalls promptly to ensure their safety on the road.
