Barclays has introduced an automatic fee-free foreign exchange benefit for eligible Premier customers using a black Premier debit card. The offer began on 28 September 2026 and applies to overseas card purchases, online foreign currency payments and eligible cash withdrawals.
The move comes as international spending continues to form a larger part of customer activity. According to Barclays, debit and credit card spending overseas rose by 2.2 per cent in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier, while foreign transactions represented 5.1 per cent of overall spending, up from 5.0 per cent.
The banking group said the change reflects shifting travel habits, with customers continuing to prioritise holidays and overseas experiences. The perk is part of a wider update to the Barclays Premier offering, which includes financial planning services, savings products and other lifestyle benefits.
Barclays Removes Foreign Exchange Fees for Eligible Premier Card Spending
The new benefit is available automatically to customers who meet the eligibility requirements and use a black Premier debit card. No separate application is required, although customers must make payments with the qualifying card to receive the fee-free foreign exchange treatment.
Eligible transactions include purchases made abroad, online purchases charged in foreign currencies and cash withdrawals overseas. According to Barclays, customers should note that some overseas cash machine operators may still charge their own fees. Standard exchange rates may also apply, and charges remain in place when adding money to a Travel Wallet.
The offer will run from 28 September 2026 until 27 September 2027. Other Barclays cards are not included, meaning customers using different debit or credit cards will continue to pay the usual foreign transaction fees.
The introduction follows a period in which travel-related spending has recovered. According to the bank, spending on travel increased by 3.1 per cent in August, while consumer research found that 49 per cent of people value holidays more than they did a decade ago.

Barclays Expands Support for Customers Through Investment Services
The foreign exchange benefit arrives alongside further changes to Barclays’ wealth and investment services. On 29 September 2026, the bank announced that it had received approval from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to provide Targeted Support, allowing it to offer additional guidance to eligible customers considering investment options.
According to Barclays, its analysis identified around 15 million UK adults holding more than £610 billion in cash savings that could potentially be considered for long-term investment. The estimate is based on savers with more than six months’ income held in cash.
Mohammad Syed, Head of Private Bank and Wealth Management UK and Crown Dependencies at Barclays, said the service aims to help customers feel more confident when making financial decisions. “Many people recognise the importance of investing for their future but are often unsure about what action to take next,” he said.
The bank said Targeted Support will initially focus on helping new investors and will be introduced through a controlled rollout later in the year. The service follows the launch of Planning and Advice for Premier customers and the removal of monthly fees for Direct Investing customers.
