The deadline affects vouchers reaching the end of their two-year validity period, including those issued in August 2024. According to MoneySavingExpert, Clubcard vouchers are valid for two years from the date they are issued, meaning any affected rewards that remain unused after the deadline will no longer be available.
More than 24 million UK households now include a Clubcard member, according to The Independent, making the approaching expiry date relevant to a large proportion of shoppers. Members can check their vouchers online or through the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app, where individual expiry dates are displayed.
The vouchers can be used at Tesco against shopping or fuel, while members can also exchange them through the supermarket’s network of Reward Partners. The value received depends on how and where the vouchers are redeemed.
How Shoppers Can Check and Use Their Clubcard Vouchers
Clubcard members with paper vouchers can find the expiry date printed directly on them. Those who no longer have the physical copies can sign in to their Tesco Clubcard account, select “Clubcard account” and then “Vouchers” to view available rewards and their expiry dates.
The same information is available in the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app by opening the “Clubcard” section and selecting “Vouchers”. Customers accessing their account online need their Clubcard number, which can be found on a physical card, key fob or a Clubcard saved in a digital wallet. Vouchers spent directly at Tesco retain their face value. A £5 voucher, for example, provides £5 towards eligible Tesco spending.
Members can receive a different value when exchanging vouchers with participating Reward Partners. According to MoneySavingExpert, a £5 voucher can currently be worth £10 with partners including Alton Towers, Disney+ and Hotels.com.
Selected restaurant partners offer triple value. Participating chains listed by the sources include Pizza Express, Bella Italia, ASK Italian, Zizzi, Frankie & Benny’s, Las Iguanas and Prezzo Italian, meaning a £5 voucher can become £15 to spend with an eligible restaurant.
The 50p Method That May Extend Voucher Validity
Customers who do not want to spend an expiring voucher immediately may be able to extend part of its value through a method tested by MoneySavingExpert. The process involves using a small portion of a voucher through the Tesco Clubcard Rewards website, rather than spending it in store. For example, using 50p from a £5 voucher can result in the remaining £4.50 being credited back to the Clubcard account.
That returned balance can then be converted into new vouchers manually or through a future Clubcard statement, with the new vouchers carrying an expiry date two years later.
There is an important restriction. According to MoneySavingExpert, Tesco’s Clubcard terms allow the company to refuse a Reward Partner order where it believes vouchers are being redeemed solely to extend the life of the points. MoneySavingExpert reported that it tested the method this week and that it worked.
The process must also be repeated for each individual voucher. For customers holding several low-value vouchers, the site notes that extending each one may be less worthwhile than doing so with a larger voucher. Tesco Group Membership & Loyalty Director Shama Wilson urged members to check “how many vouchers you are sitting on” before the deadline, as the £11 million in affected rewards will expire at 11.59pm on 31 August.
