Chinese automotive giant BYD has launched its largest recall to date, affecting over 115,000 of its popular Tang series and Yuan Pro electric vehicles. The recall comes amid growing concerns over design and battery-related safety risks, which could pose significant issues for the company’s reputation and its position in the competitive electric vehicle market.
This recall, which spans vehicles produced between 2015 and 2022, highlights the challenges BYD faces as it pushes to maintain its dominance in the fast-growing EV sector. While the company is making efforts to address the issues, the recall raises important questions about quality control in the increasingly crowded Chinese EV market.
Battery and Design Issues Prompt Massive Recall
According to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the recall involves two major vehicle models. The first, the Tang series, includes 44,535 units manufactured between March 2015 and July 2017. The issue stems from component design flaws in the drive motor controller, which could lead to circuit board corrosion and, in extreme cases, a loss of power. The Tang, a fully electric performance SUV, is known for its impressive range and rapid charging capabilities, so this recall is a significant blow for BYD.
The second recall involves the Yuan Pro model, a popular electric vehicle produced between February 2021 and August 2022. Approximately 71,248 units of this model are affected by a manufacturing defect in the battery seals. These faulty seals could allow water to enter the battery housing, potentially reducing power output. To address this, BYD plans to apply a special sealant to the affected vehicles’ batteries to restore waterproofing and eliminate any safety risks.
Implications for BYD’s Global Expansion and Reputation
This recall is a setback for BYD, which has been making strides towards becoming a global leader in electric vehicles. The company’s aggressive expansion into international markets has been underpinned by its reputation for affordable, high-performance EVs. However, safety concerns, particularly regarding critical components such as batteries and motor controllers, could dampen consumer confidence.
In addition to this recall, BYD has faced scrutiny over previous incidents, including recalls of other models earlier this year. In fact, the company was forced to recall 6,843 Fangchengbao Bao 5 SUVs due to fire risks, according to Reuters. Despite these challenges, BYD remains a major player in the Chinese EV market, though its position could be tested as consumer concerns about vehicle safety continue to mount.
While the recall may not cause immediate damage to BYD’s global ambitions, it certainly raises questions about quality control.
