Six Post Office branches across the West Midlands are set to close as TG Jones carries out a major restructuring of its store network.

Six Post Offices Are Affected Across The West Midlands

The closures are linked to the wider restructuring of TG Jones, which took over hundreds of former WH Smith high street stores. The six locations affected are: Sutton Coldfieldn, Tamworth, Harborne, Erdington, Cannock and Telford.

The Tamworth store has already closed. Sutton Coldfield is expected to close on January 9, 2027, while the Erdington, Cannock and Telford outlets are due to shut around early January. The Post Office has not given a specific closure date for the Telford branch.

Three Birmingham Areas Are Affected

Birmingham will see closures at Harborne and Erdington, where Post Office branches operate from TG Jones stores. Both locations are on their respective high streets and are due to close as part of the restructuring.

The closures could leave local customers looking for alternative places to carry out Post Office services while replacement branches are arranged.

Sutton Coldfield Store Is Already Winding Down

The Sutton Coldfield TG Jones store is currently running a closing-down sale, with discounts reaching 40%. The store is expected to close on January 9, 2027. Its Post Office branch is also due to close in early 2027.

The Post Office said a replacement location is being sought for Sutton Coldfield.

Tamworth Branch Has Already Closed

The Tamworth TG Jones store and Post Office have already closed. The closure is part of the same restructuring programme affecting the wider TG Jones network.

Customers who previously used the Post Office service at the Tamworth location will need to use another branch while the search for replacement venues continues.

TG Jones Plans Up To 150 Store Closures

Modella Capital, a private equity firm, took control of around 464 former WH Smith stores in June 2025 and rebranded them as TG Jones. Around a year later, the company entered a restructuring process that could result in up to 150 stores closing.

Some of those locations house Post Office branches, meaning the retail closures also affect local postal services. TG Jones said the restructuring was intended to secure the company’s long-term future.

Post Office Is Searching For Replacement Locations

The Post Office said it is looking for new venues for the branches affected by the closures. Vacancies have already been advertised for Cannock, Erdington, Harborne, Sutton Coldfield and Telford.

The organisation said it has received expressions of interest from other retailers and is now reviewing those proposals. Finding and preparing a replacement branch can take around six months, according to the Post Office.

TG Jones Says It Is Supporting Affected Staff

A TG Jones spokeswoman confirmed that the four newly announced West Midlands store closures are Harborne, Erdington, Cannock and Telford. She said the company recognised that the closures would be disappointing for employees, customers and local communities.

TG Jones said its focus was on supporting those affected while stores continue trading during the closure period.

Post Office Services Could Return In New Locations

The Post Office said it wants to establish replacement branches as soon as possible. The process involves identifying suitable retailers, reviewing expressions of interest and preparing the new premises.

For communities affected by the closures, the availability of a replacement branch will depend on how quickly a suitable venue can be found and set up. The changes mean customers in Sutton Coldfield, Tamworth, Harborne, Erdington, Cannock and Telford face changes to where they use Post Office services as TG Jones carries out its wider store restructuring.
