The tax-free support is intended to help older households meet their heating costs during the colder months. Payment amounts depend on a person’s date of birth, household circumstances and benefit entitlement, while most eligible pensioners will receive the money automatically without submitting a claim.
Who Qualifies for the £300 Winter Fuel Payment This Winter?
According to the Daily Express, the DWP has confirmed that people born before 28 September 1946 who live alone, or with nobody else eligible for the scheme, will receive £300 for winter 2026–27.
Those born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960 will instead qualify for £200 under the same living arrangements. The wider scheme provides payments ranging from £100 to £300, depending on the circumstances of each household.
The amount changes when two eligible pensioners share a home. Where one person is aged 80 or over and the other is younger, the older partner receives £200 and the younger partner £100, provided neither receives a qualifying means-tested benefit.
If both partners are aged 80 or over, each receives £150. Where both are below 80 but otherwise eligible, each receives £100.
Different arrangements apply to households receiving Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
According to Age UK, when a couple jointly claims a qualifying means-tested benefit, the entire household payment is made to one person receiving that benefit. This amounts to £300 where at least one qualifying person is aged 80 or over, or £200 where both are younger.

When Will the DWP Send Payments and Who Needs To Apply?
Most Winter Fuel Payments will be deposited automatically into recipients’ bank accounts during November and December 2026. Eligible households should receive a letter in October or November explaining how much they will be paid.
According to the DWP guidance, pensioners receiving the State Pension or certain benefits, including Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment and Carer’s Allowance, will generally not need to make a claim.
People who have never received a Winter Fuel Payment and do not receive qualifying benefits may need to apply. Those who have deferred their State Pension since their previous payment may also need to submit a claim.
Applications can be made using the Winter Fuel Payment claim form or by contacting the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0800 731 0160. The deadline for claims relating to winter 2026–27 is 31 March 2027.
A separate income rule also applies. Pensioners with total annual income exceeding £35,000 will have their Winter Fuel Payment recovered by HM Revenue and Customs, either through adjustments to their tax code or through Self Assessment.
The deadline to opt out of this winter’s payment has passed. Pensioners wishing to decline future payments can opt out from 21 December, without affecting their State Pension entitlement.
