The Met Office has issued a series of urgent red pollen warnings across the UK this week, alerting millions of people who suffer from hay fever. The forecast predicts “very high” levels of pollen, affecting areas like the East Midlands, London, and South East England.

With symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion on the rise, experts are urging those vulnerable to take necessary precautions.

The UK has entered peak pollen season, a time when the weather warms up and plant life begins to release pollen grains into the air. For the millions of hay fever sufferers, this change in season is often accompanied by severe discomfort.

According to the Met Office, the red alerts this week will be accompanied by several amber “high” pollen warnings in other regions, including parts of Wales and Yorkshire.

What the Red Alerts Mean for Sufferers

Issued between Monday, April 14th and Friday, April 18th, the red pollen warnings indicate “very high” levels, meaning pollen concentrations are set to reach their peak across several regions.

This comes after almost two weeks of consistent sunshine and warm weather, which led to a high pressure system. According to the Met Office, this brings a significant rise in the amount of pollen released by trees, grasses, and weeds.

The red warnings are in place for key urban and rural areas, including London and the South East, East Midlands, and parts of the West Midlands. These locations are predicted to experience the highest pollen counts, resulting in more severe symptoms for hay fever sufferers.

Individuals with respiratory issues, children, and those already experiencing mild symptoms are advised to take extra care.

Pollen forecasts are updated daily, helping people across the UK to manage their symptoms and avoid outdoor activities during peak pollen times. Sufferers are encouraged to stay indoors when possible, keep windows closed, and use air purifiers to minimise exposure.

How the Met Office Warns the Public

The Met Office has a detailed pollen forecasting system in place to guide those affected by hay fever. Their alerts range from green (low) to red (very high), with the latter signalling significant health risks

According to the Met Office’s pollen data, the severity of these warnings depends on the specific area’s pollen count and local weather patterns. Throughout pollen season, which runs from March to November, forecasts help inform the public on when symptoms are likely to worsen.

As the weather shifts towards cooler, cloudier, and rainier conditions in the coming days, these pollen counts may fluctuate. Still, those under red alerts are advised to remain vigilant, especially as the pollen levels will remain high through the end of the week.
