Families feeling the pinch this summer can stretch their grocery budgets by timing their supermarket visits carefully. According to Aldi, shopping during late evening hours can offer substantial discounts on select items, helping households manage rising food costs more efficiently.
Many UK families are grappling with increased grocery expenses during the summer holidays, as children spend more time at home. Aldi, the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket, has introduced targeted initiatives to provide financial relief, including strategic discounting and seasonal giveaways.
Smart Timing: Late Shopping Hours Yield Big Savings
According to Aldi, the most cost-effective times to shop during the summer are early morning (8am to 10am), late afternoon (4pm to 5pm), and late evening (8pm to 10pm). While the quieter store environment may be the obvious benefit, the latter time slot in particular provides the best chance to find heavily discounted items. Aldi staff reportedly begin marking down food items nearing their best-before dates towards the end of the trading day.
These markdowns apply primarily to bakery, meat, and deli products and can reach discounts of up to 75%, depending on how close the items are to their sell-by limit. Unlike traditional “yellow sticker” systems used by other supermarkets, Aldi uses red labels to identify these deals. The discounts are applied in-store only and are not advertised online, meaning shoppers must visit in person to take advantage.
The cost-saving opportunity is particularly relevant during school breaks, when grocery spending rises significantly. Research from Utility Warehouse suggests that the average UK family spends an additional £401 on groceries and snacks over the summer period. By planning shopping trips around Aldi’s quieter hours, families may offset some of this seasonal increase.
Beyond Discounts: Additional Support for Families
In addition to its pricing strategy, Aldi is offering direct support to customers through the Summer Support Scheme. Running throughout August, the initiative allows shoppers to enter a daily prize draw to win a £50 voucher, by emailing their name and address to the designated scheme inbox. According to Aldi’s published terms, one winner is selected per day, with a total of 62 digital vouchers to be awarded.
A second campaign, the Mamia New Parent Fund, targets new and expectant parents. Participants can submit a receipt of a recent Mamia nappy purchase for a chance to win a £100 Aldi voucher. Both initiatives are designed to provide relief to budget-conscious families and highlight Aldi’s effort to remain competitive in a challenging retail landscape.
