Lloyds Bank is rolling out a new feature allowing customers to deposit cash via barcode at over 30,000 PayPoint locations across the UK. The service, launching on 26 August, marks a first among major British banks and reflects an effort to adapt to customer demand for more flexible, location-independent banking services.
This feature enables deposits of up to £300 per day and a total of £600 per month in notes and coins. Customers generate a barcode via the Lloyds mobile app, valid for two hours, which can then be scanned in-store. According to Chronicle Live, the move is designed to provide more convenient access to banking services, particularly for those who may not live near a branch.
Expanding Access Through Barcode-Based Deposits
The new service is being positioned as a practical solution to meet everyday banking needs in a context where physical bank branches have been steadily closing. According to Lloyds, more than 99.5% of the UK population lives within a mile of a PayPoint location. The bank’s data shows that 94% of these stores operate seven days a week, making them widely accessible for customers with varying schedules.
Customers can use the ‘Everyday’ section of the Lloyds app to generate a unique barcode for cash deposit. The barcode can be scanned at participating PayPoint sites, enabling quick deposits without visiting a traditional bank branch. The service supports both coins and notes, though daily and monthly deposit limits are strictly capped.
In addition to PayPoint, customers can continue to deposit and withdraw cash at Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland branches, as well as at Post Office counters across the UK. According to Lloyds, customers also retain access to Banking Hubs, operated in partnership with the Post Office, and a network of in/out cash machines.
Customer Choice and Retail Network Integration
Lloyds’ move has been framed as part of its broader strategy to give users more control over how they manage money. According to Gabby Collins, Payments Director at Lloyds, “We’re always looking for smart ways to make banking more flexible and give customers more choice.” The bank asserts that the barcode-based system allows for “just a few minutes” of transaction time, particularly convenient when combining banking with other everyday errands.
Nick Wiles, CEO of PayPoint, welcomed the initiative, describing it as an integration of essential services into community retail. “The ability of Lloyds customers to now make cash deposits into their accounts at over 30,000 PayPoint locations will deliver more convenience and access for customers close to where they live.” he said.
