The UK is currently experiencing one of its hottest summers on record, with temperatures consistently above average, according to the Met Office. This sustained rise in temperature, accompanied by multiple heatwaves, has raised concerns about the impact of ongoing climate change.
According to Daily Record, two weeks remain in meteorological summer, and experts predict that 2025 could become one of the hottest summers the UK has seen since record-keeping began in 1884. As the country grapples with these conditions, it is important to understand the factors contributing to this heat and the implications for the future, particularly in the context of longer-term climate trends.
Unprecedented Heatwaves in the UK
The UK has already endured four heatwaves this year, which have set temperature records across the country. The most notable of these heatwaves occurred in mid-July, when Scotland saw temperatures surpass 30°C. This period of extreme heat coincided with the TRNSMT music festival in Glasgow, where festival-goers were met with scorching temperatures.
The highest temperature in Scotland this summer reached 32.2°C, recorded in Aviemore on July 12.
As of August 17, the UK’s average temperature from June 1 to August 17 stands at 16.2°C, which is 1.6°C above the long-term meteorological average. Although record-breaking highs have not yet been reached, the trend toward consistently warmer temperatures is clear. The 35.8°C recorded earlier this year remains the highest temperature in the UK so far, but what stands out is the consistency of above-average temperatures.
Met Office scientist Emily Carlisle explained,
“It’s looking like this summer is on track to be one of the warmest, if not ‘the’ warmest, since the series began in 1884. What’s striking is the consistency of the warmth. June and July were both well above average and even outside of heatwaves, temperatures have remained on the warmer side.”
Driving Forces Behind the Heat
Experts attribute the persistent heat to several key factors. A combination of dry ground, high-pressure systems, and unusually warm seas has created an environment where temperatures rise quickly and remain elevated. These conditions have led to prolonged periods of warmth, making the UK’s summers hotter than usual.

Carlisle added,
“This persistent warmth is driven by a combination of factors including dry ground from spring, high-pressure systems, and unusually warm seas around the UK. These conditions have created an environment where heat builds quickly and lingers.”
The Met Office points out that while the 35.8°C recorded this year is the highest so far, it’s not isolated peaks of heat that are concerning but the overall trend of consistently above-average temperatures.
“While we haven’t seen record-breaking highs, the overall trend in consistently above-average temperatures is what matters,” said Carlisle.
Another element contributing to the heat is the dry ground left over from earlier in the year. Drought conditions in parts of the country, particularly in the spring, have left the ground unable to absorb moisture, exacerbating the effects of high temperatures. This leads to further heating, as dry ground absorbs more heat than moist ground would.
Extreme Weather Becoming the Norm?
The UK’s current climate trends suggest that extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall are likely to become more common in the coming decades. A recent report from the Met Office highlighted that the last three years have been among the top five warmest years on record. This marks a significant shift in the country’s climate, with rising temperatures and increasing rainfall both contributing to the overall pattern of climate change.
Carlisle noted,
“At present, the warmest UK summers on record are pretty clustered. They include 2018 as the warmest, then 2006, 2003, 2022, and 1976. With two weeks still to go, things could of course change, but the data so far strongly suggests we’re heading towards one of the UK’s hottest summers on record.”
The report also mentions that the most recent decade, from 2015 to 2024, was 1.24°C warmer than the period from 1961 to 1990, a clear indication of how rapidly the UK’s climate is changing. In addition to higher temperatures, the UK has seen an increase in rainfall, raising the risk of flooding. More frequent storms, along with longer, hotter summers, are expected to continue as global temperatures rise.
