E.ON has announced the relaunch of its popular ‘refer a friend’ scheme, now offering customers up to £2,500 in retail vouchers. This new initiative provides an opportunity for both new and existing customers to earn significant rewards, while gaining flexibility in how they spend their vouchers. Customers can redeem the credits at a variety of high-street retailers, including Greggs, Waitrose, M&S, and Argos.
The scheme, launched in collaboration with referral platform MentionMe, comes as many households continue to feel the financial pressures of rising energy costs. With the added benefit of a range of spending options, this offer aims to appeal to a broad customer base, encouraging both energy savings and consumer flexibility.
The Mechanics of the Refer-a-Friend Scheme
E.ON’s revamped refer-a-friend initiative is designed to reward both the referrer and the new customer. According to the company, each successful referral will result in a £50 voucher for both parties, which can be spent at several leading retailers. The retail options include high-street names like Greggs, M&S, and Waitrose, offering recipients the chance to purchase food, clothing, or home essentials, among other items.
The main requirement for eligibility is that the new customer must transfer from a different energy supplier using a unique referral link provided by the existing customer. Once the new customer has paid their first direct debit, both parties will receive their vouchers.
The scheme is not limited to a single referral; each customer can make up to five referrals per day, with a total cap of 25 referrals annually, meaning that over the course of the year, a referrer could potentially earn up to £2,500 in vouchers. The flexibility of the voucher scheme provides an immediate benefit to customers, with vouchers available for instant use once the first direct debit is processed.
A Growing Trend in Customer-Centric Energy Schemes
The new E.ON scheme also reflects a broader shift in the energy sector, where suppliers are increasingly looking to provide additional incentives and benefits for customers. E.ON’s Chief Commercial Officer, Julian Lennertz, noted, “We know our customers have really valued the £50 credit they received on their energy account under our previous scheme. We’ve also learned that our customers want more choice over where and how they spend their £50 thank you, so they can get the best value for them.”
This shift is timely, as many families continue to struggle with the rising cost of living. In fact, just last month, millions of UK households were urged to apply for energy grants worth up to £1,700 through schemes like the British Gas Individual and Families Fund. By offering tangible rewards through its refer-a-friend scheme, E.ON is positioning itself as a supplier that not only meets energy needs but also understands the broader financial challenges faced by its customers.
