The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an allergy alert after undeclared hazelnuts and soya were identified in the product. Customers who purchased the affected items are being advised to return them for a refund.

The recall concerns Gü Double Sea Salted Caramel Frozen Dessert, a frozen product sold in packs containing two 85g pots. According to the FSA, the issue relates to the presence of hazelnuts (nuts) and soya lecithin (soya) that are not declared on the product label.

The warning applies specifically to products carrying lot number 126135 and a best-before date of 30 June 2027. The agency said the undeclared ingredients could present a health risk to people with allergies to hazelnuts or soya.

FSA Issues Allergy Alert and Consumer Advice

According to the Food Standards Agency, Gü is recalling the affected dessert from customers and has been advised to contact relevant allergy support organisations to help inform those who may be affected.

The agency stated that the product “may contain hazelnuts (nuts) and soya lecithin (soya), making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to hazelnuts (nuts) and/or with an allergy to soya”.

Consumers who have purchased the affected product and have either of these allergies have been instructed not to eat it. Instead, they should return it to the store where it was purchased and will receive a full refund. The FSA confirmed that no receipt is required. According to the recall notice, customers seeking further information can contact the company via the email address [email protected].

The affected product is Gü Double Sea Salted Caramel Frozen Dessert in a 2 x 85g pack size. No other lot numbers or best-before dates were identified in the recall notice released by the agency.

Company Response and Details of the Recall

Gü said the issue is believed to affect only a very small number of products. In a statement reported alongside the recall, a company spokesperson said the number of affected units is believed to be fewer than ten.

The spokesperson said that, despite the limited scope of the issue, the company decided to recall the affected date code as a precautionary measure and as part of its consumer safety commitments.

According to the company statement, Gü has also introduced additional measures designed to reduce the likelihood of a similar issue occurring again. These include strengthened allergen controls and packing controls within production processes.

The company further stated that it believes most consumers who purchased the affected products have already been contacted or otherwise notified about the recall.

The FSA also used the notice to explain the distinction between product withdrawals and recalls. It said products may be withdrawn when they are removed from shelves, while recalls occur when customers are asked to return products they have already bought.

The agency noted that food products can be withdrawn or recalled when there is a consumer safety risk linked to missing or incorrect allergy labelling. In such cases, the FSA issues an Allergy Alert to inform consumers and local authorities about the problem and any action that may be required.
