Thousands of families across the UK can receive free school uniform items this summer through a nationwide initiative from the Salvation Army. The scheme aims to help parents manage back-to-school costs by providing clothing for children ahead of the new school year.
Families Can Receive Up to Five Free Uniform Items
The Salvation Army is once again offering free school uniforms to families across the UK as children prepare to return to the classroom. Parents and guardians can collect up to five school uniform items per child at participating Salvation Army locations. The charity operates more than 250 stores nationwide, with the initiative available throughout the back-to-school period.
The programme includes a range of essential clothing designed to help families reduce spending during one of the most expensive times of the year. The giveaway began on 29 June, and parents are encouraged to check with their nearest Salvation Army store to confirm availability.
A Mix of Donated and Brand-New Clothing
The free school uniforms include both good-quality second-hand garments and new items donated by corporate partners. Available clothing includes school tops, trousers, skirts, jumpers and cardigans, giving families access to many of the essentials needed for the new term.
The Salvation Army says the initiative is designed to ensure children can return to school with suitable clothing while helping households facing financial pressure. In addition to its retail stores, several Salvation Army churches and community centres are also hosting temporary school uniform pop-up shops.
Thousands of Families Have Already Benefited
The charity says demand for the initiative has continued to grow. Last year, the Salvation Army distributed more than 29,000 school uniform items, and it hopes to exceed that figure this summer as more families seek support with back-to-school expenses.
Gary Smith, Director of Mission at the Salvation Army, said the organisation wants to help ease one of the biggest seasonal costs facing parents. He explained that buying school uniforms can place additional pressure on household budgets, particularly during the summer holidays.
Helping Families Cope With the Cost of Living
The initiative forms part of the Salvation Army’s wider community support programme, which aims to assist families facing rising living costs. Nicola Crawford, Director of Retail at Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd., said the organisation is committed to making school uniforms more accessible through donations from members of the public and local schools.
She added that the programme is intended to provide a positive and welcoming experience for parents, guardians and children preparing for the new school year. Families interested in receiving free uniforms are advised to contact their nearest Salvation Army store or community centre before visiting, as available stock may vary between locations.
