EDF has launched a new AI-powered “Bill Explainer” tool for its residential and small business customers across the UK. The digital service follows a pilot programme involving more than 58,000 users and is intended to help customers better understand their energy bills.

The rollout comes as energy suppliers continue to face pressure over transparency and customer service standards. According to EDF, the new system offers an interactive breakdown of bills and has already contributed to a reduction in billing-related enquiries during its testing phase.

Energy bills remain a common source of confusion for many households, particularly during periods of fluctuating prices and changing tariffs. EDF says the tool has been designed to provide clearer explanations tailored to individual accounts, allowing customers to review charges step by step.

The company stated that the initiative is part of a wider effort to simplify customer interactions and reduce the need for direct support on routine billing queries. Early results from the trial suggest some customers were able to resolve questions independently after using the platform.

AI Tool Designed to Explain Charges and Usage

According to EDF, the “Bill Explainer” tool uses artificial intelligence to present bills in what the company describes as a more accessible format. Customers can view an interactive explanation of charges, including details linked to energy usage and account-specific information.

The system highlights key sections of a bill and provides tailored responses based on individual customer accounts. EDF said the aim is to help users understand not only what they are being charged for, but also why those charges appear on their statement.

Mark Askew, Solutions and Automation Director at EDF Energy, said: “Energy bills haven’t always been easy to understand. Our “Bill Explainer” tool changes that by making information clearer and more accessible, so customers can feel more confident about what they’re paying for and why..”

According to the company’s announcement published on 7 May, the tool has now been rolled out to EDF’s 3.4 million residential and small business customers following the pilot programme. EDF also said the feature supports customer service operations by allowing support teams to focus on more complex enquiries while customers resolve simpler billing questions independently through the platform.

Pilot Phase Showed Decline in Billing Enquiries

During the testing phase, the “Bill Explainer” tool was made available to more than 58,000 customers. EDF stated that thousands of users chose to explore their bills through the digital experience during the trial period.

According to EDF, billing-related customer contacts fell by 5.6% among those who used the tool. The company said the figures suggest that providing clearer information may help customers answer questions without needing to contact support services directly.

The rollout also reflects EDF’s wider investment in digital infrastructure and customer-facing technology. In its company information, EDF said it currently supplies around five million customers in the UK and continues to invest in electricity infrastructure and low-carbon energy projects.

The company operates five nuclear power stations in the UK alongside onshore and offshore wind farms. EDF also confirmed that it is involved in the construction of Hinkley Point C and holds a minority investment in the Sizewell C project in Suffolk. According to EDF, the broader objective behind the “Bill Explainer” initiative is to make energy services “simpler, more transparent, and easier to manage” for customers using its platforms.
