EDF Reveals Simple Change Customers Can Make to Get More Free Electricity

EDF Energy has introduced a new loyalty scheme designed to give customers free electricity in return for shifting some household energy use away from peak periods. The programme, called Flextras, offers an initial four hours of free electricity when customers sign up and allows participants to earn further rewards.

The scheme is part of EDF’s effort to encourage more flexible electricity use among households. Customers who adjust their consumption habits can receive benefits through the company’s energy account services, with rewards linked to avoiding high-demand periods.

Customers Can Earn Free Electricity by Changing Peak-Time Habits

Flextras includes EDF’s new Weekend Saver scheme, which rewards customers for using less electricity between 4pm and 7pm, the period identified by the company as peak hours. According to EDF, customers who use less than 18% of their weekly electricity during these hours can earn free electricity.

Those who reduce their peak-hour usage further can receive a larger reward. Customers using less than 9% of their weekly electricity between 4pm and 7pm will qualify for the maximum reward of 25 free hours each month.

According to the information provided by EDF, around 70% of participants are expected to be able to earn free electricity by reducing their peak electricity use by 15%. The company said this reduction is similar to moving activities such as running a dishwasher outside peak times six times a month.

Participants can follow their progress through the EDF app, where they can see their rewards and manage their free electricity hours. The free hours can be used on Saturdays and Sundays, giving customers flexibility over when they choose to use them.

The scheme is aimed at making energy flexibility easier for households by connecting everyday changes in electricity habits with direct rewards. EDF said the programme brings together several customer benefits under one loyalty platform.

EDF Adds Renewable Energy Rewards for Some Smart Tariff Customers

Alongside Weekend Saver, EDF is offering another Flextras benefit called Power Perks for customers on certain smart time-of-use tariffs. The reward provides free electricity periods at times when there is more renewable electricity available than the grid needs.

The company said Flextras will continue to include additional offers in the future, giving customers more ways to benefit from their energy account. Joe Souto, Director of Retail at EDF, said the scheme was created to provide more value while recognising the role customers can play in a more flexible energy system.

Flextras is all about giving our customers more value, and recognising the role they can play in helping create a smarter, more flexible energy system,” Souto said. According to Joe Souto, customers using Weekend Saver can choose when to use their free weekend electricity hours, allowing them to manage the reward around their own needs.

EDF’s new scheme comes as energy providers continue to explore ways of encouraging customers to adapt their electricity use. Through Flextras, the company is offering households financial benefits linked to changes in when they consume power, rather than simply how much electricity they use.
