The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed that millions of pensioners could receive an automatic £200 payment later this year through the Winter Fuel Payment scheme. Eligible households in England and Wales are expected to receive the money between November and December to help with heating costs during winter.
Pensioners Under 80 Could Receive £200 Automatically
The DWP confirmed that pensioners born before June 27, 1960 may qualify for this year’s Winter Fuel Payment. Pensioners who live alone and were born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, are expected to receive £200.
Meanwhile, pensioners aged 80 or over, born before September 28, 1946, could qualify for a higher payment worth £300. The annual payment is designed to help older households cover heating expenses during colder months.

Most Eligible Pensioners Will Not Need to Apply
According to the DWP, most people who qualify for the payment will receive it automatically without needing to submit a claim. This includes pensioners receiving the State Pension, Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and several other qualifying benefits.
Other eligible benefits include Carer’s Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance and payments from the War Pensions Scheme. The money is expected to arrive directly into the same bank account used for pension or benefit payments.
Some People May Still Need to Make a Claim
Not all pensioners will receive the payment automatically. The DWP said people who have never received a Winter Fuel Payment before or who previously deferred their State Pension may need to apply separately.
Eligible pensioners are expected to receive confirmation letters during October and November explaining how much they will receive and when the money will arrive. Anyone who has not received their payment by January 27, 2027, has been advised to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
Higher Earners Could Repay the Money Through Tax
The Government also confirmed that pensioners with total annual incomes above £35,000 may effectively repay the Winter Fuel Payment through the tax system. HMRC could recover the payment either through changes to tax codes or through Self Assessment tax returns.
Pensioners who do not wish to receive the payment can choose to opt out before the September deadline. Winter Fuel Payments continue to provide financial support for millions of older people across England and Wales as energy costs remain a concern for many households.
The DWP said most payments will begin arriving automatically before the end of the year.
