Millions of UK pensioners and benefit claimants could receive an automatic £10 Christmas Bonus in December 2026. The tax-free payment requires no application, but eligibility depends on receiving specific benefits during a qualifying week.
Who Will Receive the £10 Christmas Bonus?
According to the Daily Record, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) provides the annual Christmas Bonus to people receiving certain qualifying benefits, including the State Pension, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Attendance Allowance.
The payment covers 24 qualifying benefits and allowances. People receiving Universal Credit alone are not eligible, although they may qualify if they also receive another benefit on the approved list.
Eligible claimants include those receiving the State Pension, including Graduated Retirement Benefit, PIP, Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit’s guarantee element, Carer’s Allowance and Disability Living Allowance. In Scotland, people receiving Adult Disability Payment, Child Disability Payment, Pension Age Disability Payment or Carer Support Payment may also qualify. Those receiving contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance can qualify once they enter the main phase of their claim.
Other qualifying payments include certain war pensions, widowhood benefits and industrial injury allowances.

The December Eligibility Rule That Could Catch Pensioners Out
Eligibility is assessed during a specific week in December, usually the first full qualifying week. For 2026, December 7–13 is the expected period, although the exact dates require official confirmation.
Claimants must also meet residency requirements, generally involving presence or ordinary residence in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Gibraltar during the qualifying week.
Simply reaching State Pension age does not guarantee payment.
DWP guidance on GOV.UK explains: “If you have not claimed your State Pension and are not entitled to one of the other qualifying benefits you will not get a Christmas Bonus.”
This distinction matters for people who have deferred claiming their State Pension and do not receive another qualifying benefit.
When Will the Money Arrive?
The bonus is normally paid automatically before Christmas, directly into the bank account used for regular benefit or pension payments.
It may arrive separately from the usual State Pension or benefit payment, meaning recipients should not necessarily expect both amounts on the same day.
The transaction generally appears as “DWP XB” on bank statements.
Eligible recipients may also receive a notification letter, although correspondence can arrive after the payment itself.
Couples Could Receive £20 Between Them
Married couples, civil partners and qualifying cohabiting couples can each receive £10 if both partners independently meet the eligibility requirements.
A partner who does not personally receive a qualifying benefit may still qualify under specific rules involving State Pension age, residency and entitlement linked to their partner’s benefits.
These provisions can apply where a claimant receives an increase in a qualifying benefit for their partner or where Pension Credit is the only qualifying benefit.
Why the Christmas Bonus Is Still Just £10
The payment dates back to 1972, when Conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath’s government introduced it to provide additional support before Christmas.
Its value has remained unchanged for more than five decades, despite substantial increases in living costs. The original £10 would be worth approximately £118 in today’s money, based on the historical inflation comparison cited in the report.
The bonus remains tax-free and does not require a separate claim. Eligible recipients should receive it automatically through their usual payment account.
