World of Sweets Recalls Two Chocolate Products After Food Safety Warning
According to the Food Standards Agency, the affected products are Dubai Style Crunchy Knafeh and Pistachio Milk Chocolate, weighing 100g, and Alyan Dubai Style Chocolate Truffles, weighing 120g. The products carry the codes 318591 and 319456, and all best before dates are included in the recall.
The FSA said salmonella had been found in the products and warned consumers not to eat them. Shoppers who have purchased the chocolates have been advised to return them to the store where they were bought to receive a full refund.
World of Sweets said in a statement that customers should contact the retailer where the product was purchased and provide proof of purchase. The company added that customers would be advised on the appropriate next steps. Point-of-sale notices are being displayed in retail stores selling the products, according to the FSA. These notices explain the reason for the recall and provide guidance for customers who may have bought the affected chocolates.
The supplier also said that the products were manufactured in Turkey by Alyan, while World of Sweets imports and distributes them in the UK. According to information provided to The Grocer, the company is working with Alyan and relevant authorities while an investigation into the cause continues.
Health Advice Issued as Authorities Monitor the Recall
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause illness after consumption. Symptoms linked to salmonella infection usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps, according to the Food Standards Agency.
The agency advised people experiencing symptoms to stay away from work, school or nursery until they have been free of symptoms for at least 48 hours. This guidance is intended to reduce the risk of passing the infection to others.
The recall follows wider attention on Dubai-style chocolate products after the FSA carried out a retail surveillance programme examining food safety and labelling standards. According to The Grocer, the programme identified issues with a number of samples tested, with salmonella detected during testing of one batch of Alyan Dubai Style Crunchy Knafeh and Pistachio Milk Chocolate.
World of Sweets said it had decided to recall all Alyan products as a precaution after the detection of salmonella in one batch. The company said it was working with retail partners to remove the products from sale and inform consumers. Customers who have bought the recalled chocolates are advised not to consume them and should follow the instructions provided by retailers or the recall notices displayed in stores.
