Parents and carers have been told to stop using the book and make sure children are not left alone with it. According to the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), the problem concerns the fly wings on the last page, which may detach when pulled and could then present a choking hazard.
Why the “I Spy a Fly” Book Has Been Recalled
The recall centres on a specific feature incorporated into the design of the Groovy Baby book. The fly pictured on its final page has wings that can, in some instances, separate from the book if they are pulled.
“The product presents a risk of choking because the fly wings on the last page of the book may in some instances detach from the book when pulled,” the OPSS said, according to The Independent. “This poses a potential choking hazard for babies and young children.”
The regulator said the product does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. The book has consequently been recalled from consumers by Make Believe Ideas (MBI).
MBI previously instructed customers to stop using the book immediately. Its advice included removing the wings from the final page and cutting each wing into four pieces. Customers were then asked to photograph the resulting 16 pieces on, or next to, the book’s last page before disposing of them in a bin inaccessible to children. “Removing the wings from the book removes this potential hazard,” MBI said in its statement, as reported by The Independent.
Customers who bought the affected book are eligible for a refund. The Sun reported that customers should be able to return the product for a full refund even without a receipt, while advising shoppers to double-check the arrangements with customer service.
Which Editions of the Groovy Baby Book Are Affected
The official recall provides information that can help consumers identify the affected product. According to the OPSS, “I Spy a Fly” is a children’s printed interactive book sold under the Groovy Baby brand and categorised as a toy book. Four barcodes or ISBN numbers are included in the recall: 9781836422600, 9781836422594, 9788384253960 and 9781836427131. The affected book was sold over a period stretching from September 2024 to August 2026.
The country of origin is listed as unknown in the government notice. The recall carries the Product Safety Database notification number 2609-0049 and was notified by Local Authority Trading Standards. The OPSS published the recall on 15 September 2026. Its notice does not provide a risk level, but identifies the measure being taken as a recall of the product from end users.
The corrective action applies directly to consumers who have the recalled book at home. Make Believe Ideas has recalled the product from end users, and the OPSS says consumers should cease using it immediately.
