Thousands of Universal Credit and Housing Benefit claimants could receive bonus payments as part of an emergency support scheme aimed at helping struggling households manage rent and council tax costs. In response to the ongoing cost of living crisis, a Midlands council has pledged over £1.2 million to assist the most vulnerable residents facing severe financial hardship.
With energy bills rising by an average of £111 per year from April, and council tax and water bills also set to increase, this new funding could offer much-needed relief for those struggling to keep up with essential payments.
Who Will Receive the Extra Support?
According to Birmingham Live, Dudley Council has confirmed that the £1.2 million package will be allocated to residents facing extreme financial difficulties. The funding will be divided between two major support schemes:
- £1 million will be added to the Discretionary Council Tax Relief Scheme, providing assistance to those struggling to pay their council tax bills.
- £200,000 will go towards Discretionary Housing Payments, offering extra support to individuals receiving Housing Benefit or the Universal Credit Rent Element.
Council leader Patrick Harley emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating: “Despite finding significant savings, we will always work to support the residents who are most in need, and that’s why we are protecting key services and facilities. This £1 million has been identified in the budget to help those most in need with meeting their council tax and rent.”
Why Is This Support Being Introduced Now?
The cost of living crisis continues to push low-income households to the brink, with rising energy bills, rent costs, and council tax increases making it harder for people to stay afloat. The government’s existing support schemes have helped many, but local councils are stepping in to bridge the gap for those facing urgent financial strain.
Dudley Council’s initiative is one of several local government efforts across the UK designed to help the most vulnerable residents manage rising costs. While these payments won’t fully offset increasing expenses, they provide crucial short-term relief for those at risk of falling behind on essential bills.
How Can You Apply for These Payments?
Eligible residents don’t need to take immediate action to receive support—funds will be allocated through the council’s existing discretionary schemes. However, those struggling with council tax or rent payments should contact their local council offices to check their eligibility and ensure they receive the help available.
As living costs continue to climb, more local councils may roll out similar support programs. Those claiming Universal Credit or Housing Benefit are encouraged to stay informed about financial assistance options in their area. With additional relief on the way, many struggling households could soon see some much-needed breathing room in their budgets.
