Lidl is introducing a new generation of self-checkout machines across its UK stores, with updated screens, cameras and lighting designed to change the way customers complete their shopping.

New Self-Checkouts Include Overhead Cameras

The machines are being installed in new stores and will gradually replace existing self-checkout equipment across the retailer’s wider UK estate. The new machines feature several hardware changes compared with Lidl’s current self-checkouts.

Customers will see a large vertically mounted screen positioned above the checkout area, alongside an overhead camera. The system displays footage of shoppers while they scan their purchases, creating a view that has been compared with a VAR-style replay.

LED lighting is also built into the machines and can alert staff when a customer needs assistance. Lidl said the new equipment has been designed to make the checkout process more customer-friendly while also supporting store operations.

Existing Stores Will Also Get New Machines

The rollout is not limited to newly opened Lidl stores. The retailer is gradually retrofitting existing self-checkout areas, meaning shoppers can expect to see the updated machines introduced at stores that already have self-service checkouts.

The technology has been developed by Schwarz Group, Lidl’s parent company. Similar machines are also being introduced at Lidl and Kaufland stores in Germany.

Shoppers Will See Themselves While Scanning

One of the most noticeable differences is the large screen positioned above the checkout. The camera provides a live view of the customer while they scan their shopping. Some shoppers who have encountered the technology have described the machines as “very futuristic“.

The screen and lighting system are designed to make the checkout area easier to use and help staff identify customers who need assistance.

Receipts Must Still Be Scanned At The Exit

The new equipment does not change one part of Lidl’s self-checkout process. Customers using the machines must still take their printed receipt after paying and scan it at the gate before leaving the store.

The receipt acts as the means of opening the exit gate, so shoppers need to keep it with them after completing their transaction.

More Self-Checkout Machines Are Being Introduced

The changes form part of Lidl’s wider investment in self-service technology. In some stores, traditional staffed checkout lanes have been removed to create additional space for self-checkout machines.

The gradual rollout means customers across the UK are likely to encounter the updated equipment as Lidl continues replacing and upgrading its existing machines.
