Barclays Customers Urged to Check Overlooked £200 Bonus Eligibility Rule

Barclays is offering a £200 reward to eligible customers who switch their current account. The rules may appear to exclude anyone already linked to the bank. Yet some existing customers could still qualify under a less obvious condition. With the August deadline approaching, checking the details may prove worthwhile.

Although the offer is described as being for new customers, the eligibility rules do not exclude everyone who already uses a Barclays product. Customers with a Barclaycard, mortgage, savings account or business banking account may still qualify, provided they did not hold a personal Barclays current account when the offer began.

The distinction matters because the bank’s definition of a new customer is narrower than it may first appear. Existing holders of a Barclays current account are excluded, but customers who use other Barclays services may remain eligible if they meet the remaining conditions.

According to Barclays, the offer applies to UK residents aged 18 or over who open a sole Barclays Bank Account through the Barclays app and complete a full switch using the Current Account Switch Service.

Who Can Qualify for the £200 Payment

Customers are not eligible if they held any open Barclays current account on or before 9 June 2026, when the offer started. This includes a Barclays Bank Account, student or graduate account, and Premier Current Account.

Anyone who has previously received a Barclays Current Account Switch Service bonus is also excluded. Joint accounts do not qualify, and the new Barclays account must remain open when the reward is paid.

There is, though, an exception that may apply to some existing Barclays customers. According to the bank’s published frequently asked questions, business banking customers can qualify if they did not have a personal Barclays account when the offer began.

Customers who already hold a Barclaycard, mortgage or savings account may also apply. Barclays instructs these customers to delete and reinstall its app, register as a new customer and apply for a Barclays Bank Account. The new account may take up to 48 hours to appear in the app.

The account must be opened in one person’s name. Applicants must also have a mobile number and be able to use the Barclays app, while those eligible only for a Barclays Basic Current Account do not qualify for the payment.

What Customers Must Do Before the Deadline

Applicants must start their application through the Barclays app by 27 August 2026. The full switch must also be initiated through the app by that date and completed within 30 days of the request. The switch must be carried out through the Current Account Switch Service and must include at least two active Direct Debits. The process closes the customer’s old account and moves incoming and outgoing payments to the new Barclays account.

Customers must pay at least £2,000 into the new account within 30 days of opening it. The amount can be transferred as part of the account switch or paid in through several instalments. According to Barclays, money deposited to meet the £2,000 requirement can still be used after it reaches the account. The bank says it will send a text message once the qualifying conditions have been met.

The £200 reward will then be paid into the new account within 28 working days. It will appear on the customer’s statement as “Switch Reward”, and the offer can be used only once per person. Barclays says circumstances beyond its control could lead it to withdraw, amend or replace the scheme. Customers therefore need to check their account status and complete each required step within the stated deadlines.
