Asda has recalled three handbags after further testing found that they may contain excessive levels of phthalates, chemicals used to soften plastics. The supermarket has advised customers to return the affected products for a full refund, even if they no longer have a receipt.
The recall follows concerns that certain phthalates could pose health risks following prolonged exposure above permitted limits, including possible damage to the reproductive system. According to Asda’s official product recall notice, issued on 23 October 2026, no safety incidents have been reported, but the products do not meet the requirements of the REACH Regulations.
Three Asda Handbags Affected by Chemical Safety Concerns
The recall covers three handbag designs sold by Asda, with prices ranging from £8 to £12.50. Each product has a specific article number and barcode, allowing customers to identify whether their purchase is affected.
The affected items are the burgundy quilted nylon camera bag, article number 1100258923, barcode 5059206287215; the zebra nylon phone bag, article number 1100258936, barcode 5059206286553; and the brown quilted nylon camera bag, article number 1100264721, barcode 5059206962396.
The supermarket confirmed that the products had initially passed the required safety checks before shipment. Later testing, however, identified a potential problem with their chemical composition. In its official statement, Asda explained: “At the time of shipment, this product successfully passed all required tests. However, subsequent testing has identified that it may contain phthalates at levels exceeding the permitted regulatory limit.”
Phthalates are chemical compounds commonly used to make plastics softer and more flexible. Certain types, including Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are subject to regulatory restrictions because of their potential effects on human health. Asda said that prolonged exposure to certain phthalates above specified limits could pose health risks and might cause damage to the reproductive system. The company has not reported any incidents involving customers who purchased the recalled bags.

Customers Offered Full Refunds As Asda Confirms Regulatory Breach
Asda has instructed anyone who purchased one of the three affected handbags to return it to their nearest store. Customers will receive a full refund without having to provide proof of purchase.
The supermarket said the recall was necessary because the products did not comply with the REACH Regulations, which govern certain chemical substances. According to Asda’s recall notice, the decision was taken to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and maintain consumer safety, despite the absence of reported incidents.
The company stated: “While no safety incidents have been reported, we are taking this action to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and to maintain our commitment to consumer safety.” The recall also highlights the distinction between products being withdrawn from sale and those being recalled from customers. A withdrawal removes affected items from shelves, while a recall asks people who have already purchased the goods to return them.
For customers seeking further information about the affected handbags or the refund process, Asda has provided its Customer Relations telephone number, 0330 053 0111. The retailer has apologised for the inconvenience and reiterated that customers do not need a receipt to obtain their refund.
