Aldi has issued a customer update outlining store opening hours and quieter shopping periods ahead of the early May bank holiday weekend. The announcement comes as millions across the UK prepare for an extended break, often marked by increased supermarket demand.
The retailer, which operates more than 1,080 stores nationwide, remains a key destination for budget-conscious shoppers. According to consumer group Which?, Aldi has retained its position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for the fifth consecutive year, reinforcing its appeal during peak shopping periods.
Opening Hours Confirmed for May 1 to 4
Aldi has published detailed opening times covering the bank holiday weekend, giving shoppers clarity as they plan ahead. Stores will operate from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2. On Sunday, May 3, opening hours will be reduced, with stores trading from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
For bank holiday Monday, May 4, Aldi locations will open at 8 a.m. and close earlier than usual at 8 p.m. The company has noted that individual store hours may vary, and customers are encouraged to check local listings online before traveling.
According to Aldi’s communication, the adjusted schedule is designed to accommodate increased footfall typical of long weekends while maintaining operational consistency across its network. The timing aligns with broader retail patterns observed during public holidays, when shorter Sunday hours and modified bank holiday schedules are standard across the UK grocery sector.
The update also arrives alongside seasonal demand shifts. According to the Met Office, the bank holiday weekend is expected to bring a mix of showers and sunny intervals, which could influence shopping behavior as more people prepare to spend time indoors.

Best Times to Avoid Crowds Identified
In addition to opening hours, Aldi has shared guidance on when stores are likely to be least busy. Shoppers looking to avoid peak times are advised to visit between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., shortly after stores open. Late evening hours, particularly between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., have also been identified as quieter periods. According to the retailer, these time slots typically see reduced customer traffic compared to midday and afternoon peaks.
Rachel Geary, Communications Director at Aldi UK, stated that the retailer aims to make shopping more convenient during busy periods. She noted that bank holiday weekends often involve gatherings or travel, increasing the need for flexible shopping options and accessible store hours.
The update coincides with continued consumer focus on grocery costs. According to Which?, Aldi recorded an average basket price of £171.32 for 95 items in March, placing it ahead of competitors such as Lidl, Tesco, and Sainsbury’s. This pricing advantage remains a significant factor influencing customer loyalty, particularly during high-spend periods like holiday weekends.
Alongside operational updates, Aldi is also reintroducing seasonal products, including its gas pizza oven priced at £69.99, available from April 30 as part of its outdoor dining range. The timing reflects increased interest in at-home food preparation during spring and early summer periods.
