Introduced in July 2025, the £1.9 billion programme aims to make zero-emission vehicles more affordable. According to GB News, more than 190,000 motorists have already benefited from the grant, while almost 100,000 electric cars were registered in September alone.

Twenty Electric Car Models Qualify for the Maximum £3,750 Discount

The Government’s Electric Car Grant divides eligible vehicles into two categories, with Band 1 offering the largest reduction of £3,750. The latest official list includes 20 models and variants from manufacturers ranging from Fiat and Hyundai to BMW and Renault.

Among the more affordable options is the Fiat 500e, priced from £17,245, with a driving range of up to 199 miles. The Renault 5 with its 52kWh battery is listed at £21,495, offering up to 259 miles, while the Renault 4 costs £23,445 and provides up to 249 miles.

Ford has two vehicles in the higher discount category. The Puma Gen-E is priced at £26,245, with a range of up to 259 miles, while the E-Tourneo Courier costs £29,440 and offers up to 198 miles.

According to The Sun, Ford was the first manufacturer to secure the full £3,750 grant for one of its electric cars. The newspaper also reported that the discount made the Puma Gen-E cheaper to purchase than its petrol-powered counterpart.

Other qualifying vehicles include the BMW iX1 and iX2, both listed at £33,315, and the MINI Countryman Electric, priced at £33,005. The Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia EV4 and Alpine A290 also appear in Band 1.

For drivers seeking longer ranges, the Citroën ë-C5 Aircross Long Range offers up to 421 miles at £32,935. The Renault Scenic provides up to 392 miles, while the Nissan Leaf is listed with a maximum range of 387 miles.

A Further £1,500 Discount Applies to Dozens of Electric Vehicles

Band 2 provides a maximum discount of £1,500 and covers a considerably wider selection of electric cars. Models include the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5, alongside the Kia EV3, Nissan Ariya and Ford Explorer.

The Peugeot E-3008 is listed at £34,315, with a range of up to 435 miles. Other examples include the Vauxhall Grandland Electric at £35,645, offering up to 425 miles, and the Ford Capri at £36,985, with a range of up to 389 miles.

According to the UK Government’s official guidance, qualifying vehicles must produce zero tailpipe emissions, provide a minimum battery range of 100 miles and meet specified sustainability requirements.

Vehicles must also carry a warranty of three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Their batteries require separate coverage of eight years or 100,000 miles. Motorists do not need to submit an application. The dealership applies the relevant grant directly to the vehicle’s purchase price.

The two-band system therefore offers different levels of support across a broad selection of electric cars, with eligibility determined by the Government’s published criteria and approved vehicle lists.
