Atlantic Weather Systems Bring a Change in Conditions
A band of rain is expected to move southeast across the UK on Saturday, bringing wet and locally windy weather, particularly in northern and western areas. According to the Met Office, weather systems moving in from the Atlantic will make conditions more unsettled through the weekend.
The change follows the warmest summer on record for the UK, with the average mean temperature between June and August reaching 16.5C. The record was confirmed by the Met Office after temperatures exceeded the previous summer record set only one year earlier.
Forecast temperatures are expected to drop to between 13C and 16C over the weekend. Rain will spread across areas including the Midlands, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and East Anglia before conditions become brighter on Sunday.
Regional forecasts show a mix of rain, wind and sunshine. Scotland will see brisk winds and rain before drier weather arrives on Sunday. Northern England is expected to experience another spell of wet and windy conditions on Saturday, followed by sunshine and scattered showers.
Wales will see a wet front move southeast on Saturday before calmer and drier weather develops on Sunday. Southern England is expected to have rain and wind on Saturday night, with Sunday bringing the brightest conditions of the weekend. Northern Ireland will also see Atlantic rain and winds before sunshine and showers return.
Rain Will Not End Drought Conditions
The rainfall arriving this weekend will not immediately resolve the drought conditions that developed after a prolonged period of heat and limited rainfall. According to experts, the rain may help moisten surface soils, but more sustained rainfall will be needed to improve groundwater levels.
Heatwaves and dry conditions during the summer affected large areas of England and Wales, leaving agricultural soils dry, reducing reservoir levels and leading to hosepipe restrictions in some areas.
According to the Environment Agency’s latest report on dry weather and drought in England, covering 21 to 27 August 2026, there has been little change in drought conditions so far. During the peak of the August heatwave, almost three quarters of the UK were experiencing drought.
Forecasters expect the days ahead to bring a typical autumn pattern, with periods of rain, wind and sunshine as weather fronts continue to move from the west. The weekend weather marks a shift away from the exceptional warmth of summer, but the effects of the dry months will continue until more consistent rainfall arrives.
