British shoppers are collectively spending an estimated £163 million extra each summer due to urgent, last-minute purchases driven by heatwaves, holidays, and spontaneous plans, according to new research. The so-called “summer tax” refers to rising spending on fast delivery fees and higher prices for in-demand seasonal items.

Rising Cost of Summer Convenience

A survey of 2,000 UK adults found that nearly a third have paid an average of £9.82 for express delivery to get essential items quickly. Popular purchases include fans, sun cream, and swimwear, often ordered during sudden bursts of hot weather or just before holidays.

In total, these rushed purchases contribute to millions of pounds spent on delivery charges alone, as shoppers race to secure items before a heatwave or trip begins.

Heatwaves Driving Higher Prices

The research also found that more than half of respondents (51%) spend more than expected during the summer months, while 53% say they have noticed so-called “heatwave hikes”, where prices rise as demand increases.

Items most affected include sun cream, cold drinks, and electric fans, with consumers reporting noticeable price increases during periods of hot weather. Alongside price rises, many households are also spending extra on unplanned purchases, averaging an additional £25.16 beyond their initial budgets.

Forgotten Essentials Add to Costs

A significant number of people also admit to forgetting essential items when travelling or planning summer activities. Around 46% of respondents said they had left behind key items such as toiletries, sun cream, or sunglasses when going on holiday or day trips, reports The Sun.

Other commonly forgotten items include phone chargers, travel adapters, and headphones, leading many to buy replacements while already travelling. As a result, 56% end up purchasing items during their trip, while nearly a third buy essentials at airports, often at higher prices.

Pressure on Summer Budgets

The study highlights broader financial strain during the warmer months. Around 23% of people say they struggle more to stick to a budget in summer, while one in five believe it is the most expensive season for unplanned spending.

Many also admit to becoming less cautious with money, with social events, holidays, and warm weather all contributing to increased spending pressure.

Calls for Better Planning and Savings

Financial experts say much of this extra cost could be avoided with better planning. They warn that urgent purchases and express delivery fees can quickly add up, particularly during periods of extreme weather.

Some retailers are responding by offering faster and cheaper delivery options, while consumers are increasingly looking for ways to reduce last-minute spending through better preparation and price comparison.
