Whitbread, the company behind Premier Inn and several well-known restaurant brands, is moving forward with a major restructuring plan that could transform its hospitality operations across the UK. The proposal includes the closure or sale of dozens of restaurant sites, putting thousands of jobs at risk while opening the door for new operators to take over some high-profile locations. In Oxfordshire, two prominent venues have already been placed on the market, highlighting how the company’s strategy is beginning to take shape on the ground.
Oxfordshire Venues Enter the Market as Whitbread Refocuses Its Business
According to Oxford Mail, Whitbread has listed two restaurant properties in Oxfordshire as part of its wider review of underperforming hospitality assets. The move follows the company’s decision to streamline its restaurant portfolio while placing greater emphasis on its successful Premier Inn hotel business.
Among the sites now available is The Acorn near Bicester Village, one of the UK’s busiest retail destinations. The marketing materials emphasize the property’s commercial potential and the steady flow of visitors generated by nearby attractions and accommodation. Its listing states: “The property presents an excellent opportunity to acquire a large-format hospitality venue in one of Oxfordshire’s strongest retail and tourism locations.
“The close proximity to Bicester Village provides exposure to significant visitor numbers, while the adjacent Premier Inn delivers an additional source of customer demand throughout the week.”
The combination of retail tourism, hotel guests, and strong regional transport links makes the site attractive for investors looking to establish or expand hospitality operations in one of southern England’s busiest commercial corridors.

A second property, The Applecart, has also been placed on the market. Positioned in a well-connected commercial area, the venue is being promoted as a flexible opportunity capable of supporting multiple business models. Its listing states:
“The Applecart presents an excellent opportunity to acquire a substantial hospitality venue in one of Oxfordshire’s most strategically located commercial positions.
“The combination of strong roadside prominence, excellent transport links, extensive parking and direct access to both business and residential catchments provides multiple income opportunities for an incoming operator.”
The listings suggest Whitbread sees greater value in allowing new operators to redevelop or reposition these sites while the company concentrates resources on its core accommodation business.

Thousands of Employees Could Be Affected Across the United Kingdom
The Oxfordshire property sales form part of a much broader restructuring effort that extends well beyond a handful of restaurants. Whitbread has proposed sweeping operational changes that could reduce its workforce significantly as it adjusts to changing customer demand and evolving business priorities.
The company estimates that approximately 3,800 roles could ultimately be eliminated from a workforce of roughly 30,000 employees across the UK and Ireland. At the same time, Whitbread says it expects many affected employees to find opportunities elsewhere within the organization because of its large annual recruitment needs.
The company said:
“As a business which recruits around 15,000 people every year, we expect to be able to retain a significant proportion of those affected and will be looking to redeploy as many of our impacted colleagues as possible.
“However, we do anticipate that the proposed changes, which are subject to consultation, would result in a reduction of around 3,800 roles of a total UK and Ireland workforce of around 30,000.
“We will do all we can to support those colleagues affected.”
The consultation process remains ongoing, meaning the final number of affected positions could still change before the restructuring is completed.
