Winter heating costs remain a concern for many older households as pensioners prepare for another season of higher household expenses. The Winter Fuel Payment continues to provide support for eligible retirees, with payment amounts varying according to age and personal circumstances.
Older Pensioners To Receive Higher Winter Fuel Payments
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that some older pensioners will receive an additional £100 in their winter payment, with most eligible people receiving the money automatically. State pensioners born before September 28, 1946, will receive the higher payment rate for winter 2026.
These pensioners will receive a total of £300, compared with the standard £200 payment available to many other eligible retirees. People born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, will receive £200 for winter 2026.
The amount paid depends on the person’s date of birth and circumstances during the qualifying week, which runs from September 21 to September 27, 2026.
Payments Expected Before Christmas
Most eligible pensioners will receive their Winter Fuel Payment automatically. The DWP said payments are expected between mid-November and Christmas, with recipients receiving a letter in October or November explaining how much they will receive and how the payment will be made.
The government advises people who believe they qualify but do not receive a letter to check whether they need to submit a claim.
Winter Fuel Payment Rules Have Changed In Recent Years
The Winter Fuel Payment system has undergone several changes in recent years. The government previously introduced income-based conditions linked to Pension Credit, meaning some pensioners were no longer automatically entitled to the payment.
The current system has returned to broader eligibility rules, with payment amounts determined mainly by age and circumstances during the qualifying period. The government states that eligible people born before September 28, 1946, will receive £300, while those born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, will receive £200.
Some Pensioners May Need To Apply
While many pensioners receive the payment automatically, some people may need to make a claim. According to Age UK, those receiving certain benefits, including Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, should usually receive the payment automatically through the main benefit claimant.
People who have never received a Winter Fuel Payment before, as well as some Universal Credit claimants, may need to apply. Those receiving Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit are also required to make a claim.

The DWP has advised eligible people to review their letters and payment information during the autumn period. Anyone who does not receive their payment or has questions about eligibility can contact the Winter Fuel Payment helpline.
