The initiative comes as many Americans continue to face financial pressure from rising living costs. States including Massachusetts, Hawaii, and New York have been taking steps to address the growing burden of medical debt, while nonprofit organizations have expanded efforts to provide direct relief.
The latest debt forgiveness program focuses on residents of Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Indiana, and New York. Through its partnership with Undue Medical Debt, the Arconic Foundation has supported the cancellation of millions of dollars in outstanding medical bills by purchasing qualifying debt and eliminating it rather than attempting to collect payment.
More Than 26,000 People Receive Medical Debt Relief
According to The Sun, more than 26,000 Americans have benefited from the initiative, with each recipient having an average of $1,127 in medical debt erased.
The Arconic Foundation also worked with Undue Medical Debt to eliminate an additional $3.9 million in medical debt for more than 3,400 residents in East Tennessee.
The foundation states that every dollar it donates generates an average of $100 in medical debt relief, allowing contributions to be leveraged into significantly larger amounts of canceled debt.
Eligibility Is Determined Automatically Through Financial Criteria
According to Our Quad Cities, Undue Medical Debt identifies eligible individuals using income and debt thresholds rather than accepting applications from the public.
The nonprofit acquires portfolios of medical debt belonging to households with incomes at or below 400% of the federal poverty level, or where medical debt represents at least 5% of a household’s income.
The report gives the example of a family of three qualifying for assistance if it has medical debt totaling just over $100,000.
People cannot apply directly to either Undue Medical Debt or the Arconic Foundation for assistance. Instead, eligible individuals are selected anonymously and receive a letter from Undue Medical Debt informing them that some or all of their medical debt has been eliminated.
Nonprofit Purchases and Abolishes Medical Debt Instead of Collecting It
Undue Medical Debt operates by purchasing bundles of delinquent medical bills from hospitals and healthcare providers at discounted prices.
Rather than seeking repayment from patients, the organization cancels the debt entirely.
Arconic Foundation President Ryan Kish said the partnership is making a meaningful difference for affected families.
“While many people recognize the medical debt crisis and the burden it places on families, Undue Medical Debt is leading with bold action to help people and is quietly changing lives,” Kish said.
He added: “Undue’s scalable and efficient model does more than relieve debt, it spreads compassion and generosity in our communities.”
