SSI provides monthly financial assistance to people with limited income and resources who are elderly, blind, or have a qualifying disability. The federal program is separate from traditional Social Security benefits and is funded through general federal tax revenues rather than payroll taxes.
SSI Payment Date Changes Because of the Calendar Schedule
SSI benefits are normally issued on the first day of each month, but payments are moved when that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday. According to the Social Security Administration, recipients may receive their payment on the last business day before the start of the month in those cases.
The agency explained in a 2022 blog post that the earlier payment does not represent an additional benefit. “It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month,” the SSA said, adding that recipients do not need to contact the agency to report receiving two payments in the same month when this scheduling change occurs.
As of June 2026, around 7.3 million Americans receive SSI benefits. The amount paid to each person depends on factors including living arrangements and other sources of income. Eligibility requires meeting financial limits on income and assets, as well as meeting age or disability requirements. The maximum monthly SSI payment in 2026 is $994 for an individual recipient. Eligible couples can receive a maximum of $1,491 per month.
Other Social Security Payments and Future Funding Concerns
Recipients waiting for other Social Security benefits, including retirement, spousal, and survivor payments, will follow the regular August payment schedule. According to the SSA, payments will be made on August 3 for beneficiaries who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 or who receive both Social Security and SSI.
Additional payment dates include August 12 for beneficiaries with birthdays between the first and tenth of the month, August 19 for those with birthdays between the eleventh and twentieth, and August 26 for those with birthdays between the twenty-first and thirty-first.
The SSA advises people who do not receive a payment on their scheduled date to wait three additional mailing days before reporting a missing payment. Recipients can contact the agency at 1-800-772-1213, or 1-800-325-0778 for TTY services, during weekday business hours.
Social Security’s long-term finances remain a topic of debate among lawmakers and policy experts. According to a recent analysis from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan think tank, the Social Security retirement trust fund could face depletion at the end of 2032 based on current projections from the program’s trustees.
The analysis stated that benefits could be reduced by an estimated 22 percent under current law if no legislative action is taken, because payments cannot exceed incoming payroll tax revenue. Proposed approaches include changes to payroll taxes, adjustments to retirement rules, and modifications to benefit calculations. Congress has not reached a bipartisan agreement on a long-term solution.
