SNAP, commonly known as food stamps, provides monthly food assistance to eligible low-income households. The program is federally funded and overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, while states handle day-to-day administration and determine when benefits are deposited into recipients’ electronic benefit transfer accounts.

According to reports, preliminary USDA figures for April 2026 show that about 37 million people in more than 20 million households received SNAP benefits. Nearly $7 billion in assistance was issued during that month, with an average payment of $186.87 per person and $342.80 per participating household.

September Payment Dates Vary Widely From State to State

There is no single nationwide SNAP payment date. Some states issue benefits to nearly all recipients on one day, while others spread deposits across several days or weeks according to case numbers, identification numbers or other state-specific scheduling systems.

Rhode Island, North Dakota, Alaska, Vermont and the Virgin Islands are scheduled to issue September benefits on September 1. New Hampshire distributes benefits on September 5, while South Dakota issues them on September 10. Utah uses three separate payment dates: September 5, 11 and 15.

Other states operate much longer distribution windows. Florida and Texas both issue benefits from September 1 through September 28. Alabama distributes payments from September 4 through September 23, while Delaware uses a September 2 through September 23 schedule. Georgia and Indiana also run payments from September 5 through September 23.

California distributes CalFresh benefits during the first 10 days of the month based on the final digit of a recipient’s county case number. A case number ending in 5, for example, receives benefits on the fifth day of the month. Connecticut uses the last two digits of a recipient’s client ID to schedule deposits.

Maximum benefit amounts are set federally. For fiscal year 2026, the maximum monthly allotment in the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., is $298 for one person, $546 for two people, $785 for three people and $994 for a household of four. Higher maximums apply in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

SNAP September Payment Dates Vary Widely From State to State

The number of people receiving SNAP has declined since the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second administration. In January 2025, 42.82 million people were receiving benefits. By April 2026, participation had fallen to 37.01 million. That represents a decrease of about 5.8 million people, or 13.6 percent, based on preliminary USDA data.

A policy change during this period came through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law by Trump on July 4, 2025. The law expanded SNAP’s time-limited work requirement, under which affected adults generally must work or participate in qualifying activities for at least 80 hours each month to receive benefits for more than three months in a three-year period. The requirement was expanded from certain adults ages 18 to 54 to include those through age 64, along with some parents whose youngest child is 14 or older. Previous exemptions for veterans, homeless people and some former foster youth were also removed.
